PhilB Posted 24 September , 2004 Share Posted 24 September , 2004 As an addendum to a recent string on Officers` servants, the following from "The RFC in WW1" may be of interest. On a long distance bombing squadron towards the end of the war, Willie Read had a batman who volunteered to become proficient on the Lewis gun solely to accompany and succour his "gentleman" on bombing raids. A valet in peacetime, he always went aboard with a little suitcase "in case we land the other side, sir". Food and drink while airborne and something extra for emergencies seemed no more than prudent husbandry. Phil B
