JOSTURM Posted 21 June , 2014 Author Posted 21 June , 2014 Hi Karen, would love to have picture to add to my HMS Champion collection. My Grandfather, Harry Leonard was a young Marine on the ship from 1917 to 1920 aged 17 to 20. e: pleonard1@mmm.com Regards Peter
JOSTURM Posted 17 September , 2015 Author Posted 17 September , 2015 Hi Karen (1966), would you email me your picture of Alfred Gardiner in Uniform ? Regards Peter
Alf Posted 2 May , 2019 Posted 2 May , 2019 I have found a photo belonging to a late family member which shows a group of 20 sailors wearing an HMS Champion flat cap. The photo was sent to my grandmother by her brother Alf who served in the RN during WW2. The photo is undated. I am unable to be absolutely certain but believe that Alf is in the photo. I do not know when he signed up for the services but believe it was just before the start of WW2. Alf was a stoker and unfortunately went down with HMS Barham which was sunk in 1941. Was HMS Champion in service during WW2? I can't recall anyone in the family ever mentioning this ship.

The WW1 cruiser was sold for scrapping in 1934. The photo must pre-date that event. Do you have a full name for "Alf"? Edited 2 May , 2019 by horatio2
Alf Posted 2 May , 2019 Posted 2 May , 2019 Thanks for your reply. Alf's full name was Alfred Munns. He was a stoker on the Barham. 1 hour ago, horatio2 said: There was no HMS CHAMPION in WW2. horatio2 Posted 2 May , 2019 Posted 2 May , 2019 There is a partial (1927-1929) record of his RN service as a stoker at Kew - https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C14785056 His subsequent record is at Kew on this link - https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/7bff14933581403c8711897ef7dd68ae The second record shows that he served in the cruiser HMS CHAMPION from January 1931 to September 1932.
Alf Posted 2 May , 2019 Posted 2 May , 2019 Thanks very much for this information it was extremely helpful.I Iwill explore this lead in more detail. I would like to share the photo so it is preserved for the future. Presumably it would be of interest on this site. I also hold a photo of Alf (known by family as Tubby) in uniform with a Barham hat which presumably could be put on their site. Again very grateful. Kind regards.
horatio2 Posted 2 May , 2019 Posted 2 May , 2019 A full list of his shipmates lost in BARHAM is on this link - http://www.naval-history.net/xDKCas1941-11NOV2.htm
Alf Posted 3 May , 2019 Posted 3 May , 2019 I am attaching a photo of sailors from HMS Champion. The discussion between myself (Member name Alf) and Horatio 2 above summarises the background. It appears that the attached would have been taken sometime between January 1931 and September 1932. I will be posting a further photo on the HMS Barham site with my relative wearing the Barham flat cap.
