Am trying to build up a picture of the Mansura Redoubs in the Sheikh Abbas Sector prior to 3rd Gaza, Running in a line down to Whale Post I think were top to bottom :

Arran, Bote, Moll and Tona Redoubts.

Can Anyone confirm ?

I have a sketch of the redoubts from the Sheikh Abbas Sector trench map but unfortunately it is not labelled.

Anybody have any detail on this area of the ridge ?

Regards

Dave

One further thought on this. there was a lot of working parties working on these redoubts from July ~ mid September 1917. Prior to this I have ref's to different named redoubts inc Harley, Brentwood and Abdul. none of which I have yet been able to place post Gaza. Were the defences rebuilt (and renamed) during this period ?

Again I cant locate any cross ref todate.

Neither text nor maps in The Official History make any reference to any of those places.

Gareth

Arran, Bote, Moll and Tona come from 232nd Bde and 5th Devon War Diaries. I am trying to determine if the trench map below shows them as the 4 enclosures behind the trench system at Mansura Locality

Brentwood and Harley can be seen here on the left of the Apex so I think they remained in existance and the 4 redoubts above were additional.

Regards.

I don't have any more detailed maps of that area sadly.

I got the names sorted out thanks to the 2/5th Hants War Diary (easier to read). They are :

Arran, Bute, Iona and Mull

Seems the Redoubts were named after Western Isles.

Does this shed any light for anyone ?
