SilverFox100 Posted 9 October , 2013 Share Posted 9 October , 2013 I now have quite a few of these war diaries of the various battalions of the infantry brigades that made up the 3rd Division. One of them, the 1st Northumberland Fusiliers, of the 9th Infantry brigade, are the only ones I have read so far that each month during the fighting they were involved in during 1914/15 (so Mons etc) give the names of not just the officers, but also all ranks, listed as killed, wounded or missing and the relevant date. All of their 'actions' are listed separately with these lists in appendix at the end of each month. Let me know if you want any information of who and when and I will try to help. Regards. Canuck7542 Posted 7 November , 2013 Share Posted 7 November , 2013 Mike, Do your diaries include the 2nd Royal Irish Rifles? They were in the 7th brigade of the 3rd Division until October 1915. I am looking for information on a relative, Andrew Johnston 8856. He was in France for the last 4 days in August 1914, after the retreat from Mons. He spent Sept to Dec 1914 in England, probably retraining after being called up from the reserves, and then rejoined the battalion from Jan 1915 to June 1915. He was wounded on June 26 near Hooges, after the battalion returned to the front line after the Battle of Bellwaarde. He was discharged as a result of the wound. Hi Canuk7542 Yes I have the war diaries for 2nd Royal Irish Rifles. On the 26th June as you state he was at Hooges and I can quote from the diary for 26th as follows "In trenches. A little shelling by enemy along our line. A portion of the parapet and parados of B9 damaged. 2 OR wounded". Unfortunately they only give names of officers killed or wounded in the diaries. It seems he could have been wounded in B9 trench. To give you more information the battalion had marched on the 23rd to the trenches B8 and B9 near Hooge, relieveing the 3rd Worcestershires. If you want any further info of the battalion from when they arrived in France on 14th Aug 1914 until when your relative was wounded just PM me and I can let you know. Regards.
