stephen p nunn Posted 6 October , 2013 Share Posted 6 October , 2013 Dear all, I am researching a man who was KIA with the 2/6 Gloucestershire Regiment on 26/8/16. I know the battalion landed in France on 24/5/16. This man is buried at Pont-Du-Hem. Can any Gloucestershire expert tell me what they were up to at that time please? Many thanks. SPN Maldon I think my man might have been in Chelmsford before training and going over to France. His service number is 5014 - surname THOMAS, but forename could be George or Frederick? sotonmate Posted 6 October , 2013 Share Posted 6 October , 2013 M CWGC gives F Thomas 5014. Pont-Du-Hem is on the La Bassee to Estaires road and has a mix of burials and re-burials. Your man is in Plot II so seems likely to have either been buried there at the time of his death by his unit,or by a Field Ambulance. Can't get SDGW for some reason so you can look for yourself later ! 2/6 were with 183 Brigade of 61 Division who were decimated at Fromelles and then deployed to holding trench lines after 19 July 1916. His is the only 2/6 fatality on the day from this unit at this cemetery. I guess you are going to need to see what WO95/3060/2 has to say in relation to their whereabouts on 26 Aug 1916. It is digital and you'll get the whole Brigade happenings for the paltry sum !
simon2 Posted 6 October , 2013 Share Posted 6 October , 2013 On that day the 2/6th were relieving the 2/7th Battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment in front line trenches in the 'MOATED GRANGE' sector near Neuve Chapelle. No casualties were listed for that day so can only assume it may be down to a shell burst. The majority of Aug was very quiet. The 2/6th stayed in Chelmsford as one of the training establishments before embarking for France.

GraemeClarke Posted 7 October , 2013 Share Posted 7 October , 2013 Morning, I'm getting confused here. The NA says the WD has been digitised http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/SearchUI/Details?uri=C7355341 but when you go to the link its not there !! simon2 Posted 7 October , 2013 Share Posted 7 October , 2013 Morning Graeme, I think there is a glip in their system. I downloaded this diary over a year ago so it is definately digitized. Cheers, Simon.
