HarryBettsMCDCM Posted 23 September , 2004 Posted 23 September , 2004 A very nice WW2 DSM ,in case of issue, was on BBCs the Boot Sale Prog this morning, belonging to the participants Brother for Gallantry off the French Coast in 1943,Valued @ a Three Piece Suite by the "expert"{what the Seller was hoping for}@ least it wasn't offered @ the CB,but sent to a 'Specialist'.,{Philip Burman~ who offered £800.00;A Very fair price,IMHO};Also on offer was a Gold American Pocket Watch of a WW1 Casualty that had been given to the Soldier's Fiancee',Sold for:~£30.00!! Ridiculous!;it amazes me what people will do to get on TV!& Flog off their Heritage for a Settee!!
andy 1 Posted 23 September , 2004 Posted 23 September , 2004 the thing is harry you can get three people on a settee, you can't get three people on a watch. i can't understand why they didn't save the watch to show the medal collector,i bet he would have offered more than 30 quid.he seemed a decent bloke. rgds andy

Very true Andy,I suppose Im just biased,a settee is a settee is a settee, but a DSM is,well a DSM!{I'd rather have that & sit in my old Three piece!}As you say I couldnt understand the WW1 casualty's Watch being flogged off @ the Car Boot, especially @ 1/3 the recommended price,Just the Valuers pricing as a Watch rather than an item with a Story to tell! That story has gone now the watch has been sold off as an anonymous item. Philip Burman is a well respected Dealer in the East Anglian Area{Based near King's Lynn}so I wasn't surprised @ his honest Valuation.
Guest Ian Bowbrick Posted 23 September , 2004 Posted 23 September , 2004 Roger, Whilst I totally agree with you, if wasn't for people like these neither you or I would have a collection or be able to source new material. Ian

Ian I know Ian; it is a double edged sword;it just seems so cold & clinical & somehow "Dirty" when it passes as entertainment,I think my dotage approaches, its the attitude rather than the actual selling{which as we all know has gone on for many many decades};I think;I find distasteful; the "Flog It" mentality of knowing the price of everything but the "Value" of absolutely nothing, ;Ah well, back under my Stone.
Staffsyeoman Posted 25 September , 2004 Posted 25 September , 2004 Well said Roger... yup, they know the price, but the 'value' is a distant quantity.
