In memory of the men of 9th Bn Sherwood Foresters who died whilst attacking Ferdan House (V.19,a,7,6)
55 men are named on the Tyne Cot memorial.
20 others are buried locally or died of wounds.
The total casualties for the day would be 15 officers and 234 other ranks.

11270 Horace Painter was a regular in 1st Bn and in December 1914, recovered from wounds at the Majestic Hotel, Paris.

He joined the 9th Bn in October 1915 on Gallipoli - killed 04/10/1917 (He lived in the village I was born in)

Fred Greaves would win his Victoria Cross for taking a concrete strong point and organising men later to stop an enemy counter.

Gallantry awards -
1 - VC
3 - M.C.
7 - D.C.M.
13 - M.M. (at least, possibly more)

Never Forgotten :poppy:

I telephoned Fred's daughter today and she is a proud of him now as ever.
