Can anyone confirm who commanded this Battery when it went to France? The July 1914 Army List does not record a commanding Major; I believe Captain Marshall, 2Lts Du Buisson, Steevens and Gossage did go to France.

thanks.

I had not realised the coincidence of battery numbering with the AIF. The RFA 25th Brigade was made up of 113, 114 and 115 Batteries RFA in 1914. [later, 40th Howitzer Bty RFA joined]

Here is what I have for 1st Division's XXV Brigade:

Lt. Col. J.G. Geddes

113 Bty. - Major Wilfrid Ellershaw
114 Bty. - Major (Bvt. Lt. Col.) Webb Gillman, D.S.O.

115 Bty. - Major J.H.W. Johnstone
Bde. Ammn. Col. - Capt. R.J. Adams

I think this information came from Dick Flory (hopefully he will be along to confirm it).

Dave is correct. When it went to France and Flanders on 18 August 1914 114th Battery, 25th Brigade, RFA was commanded by Bvt. Lt. Col. Wilfred Gillman, DSO. The other officers in the battery were:

Capt. E T Marshall

2nd Lieut. T G Du Buisson

2nd Lieut. E U Walshe

2nd Lieut. D J Steevens

I have Lt T G Du Buisson's photo album which contains numerous photos of the battery.

many thanks to all of you. Dick Flory, does Du Buisson have the battery photo taken at Deepcut sometime [earlier?] in 1914 - perhaps with Major Usborne still in command? I was trying to put names to faces on a copy i have. There also seem to be a couple of additional subalterns, presumably 'attached' many thanks for the helpful replies

battiscombe: Major Usborne left 114th Battery, RFA sometime between July and October 1913, as Maj T A Cubitt was OC in October 1913, so your photo predates October 1913. DuBoisson's album has three group photos of what I presume is XXV Brigade, RFA but none of the photos have names. There is one large photo of XXV Brigade, RFA passing in review for the King's birthday in 1914 which does show names and the following officers of the Brigade are named in photos in the album: Lt CFP Battersby, 2Lt TG DuBoisson, Lt HN Fairbank, Lt GEW Franklyn, LCol J G Geddes, LCol W Gillman, 2Lt EL Gossage, Lt WB Gossset, Maj JHW Johnstone, Cpt ET Marshall, Cpt WH Norton, Lt ECA Schreiber, 2Lt DJ Steevens, Lt EG Tucker, and Lt EG Waller.

Thanks very much for that. This image of 114th Bty at Deepcut is dated 1914 and i was therefore wrong concerning Usborne , the Major seems likely to be Major Thomas Cubitt then. who had been posted to Somaliland in July 1914 it seems. This does indeed look like it could be him - with DSO, and W African ? medals

Hello

I was fascinated to pick up this thread on 114 Battery XXV Brigade RFA. I think I should apologise for taking advantage of your research and knowledge but your advice and guidance would be much appreciated.

My great uncle - 681677 Dvr William Beesley served with the 114th from Sept 1915 until discharged wounded (SWB list) January 1919. I've tried Ancestry and the internet but can't seem to find any info relating to: Where the 114th Battery served between Sept 1916 and August 1918 - and where/wage he might have picked up his 'wound'.

Any direction you can give would be appreciated.

Many thanks

Chris

they were with 1st Division throughout - the war diaries of 25th Brigade can be downloaded for a few £s .. reference WO95-1248 . which provide a day by day account [which is not an interesting as it sounds.. its very uninformative..]

the number you give is odd as that is linked to the territorial units of the 1st and 2nd/ 2nd West Lancs Brigades..[276th Bde and 286th Brigades..] are you sure he was with 114th?

Hi Battiscombe, thanks for the response. The reason I thought he was in 114th battery is that on his medal card for the Victory and War Medals it say...... " (TF) RFA / 114 B " ..... Which I took to be 'Royal Field Artillery / 114 Battery'. I sense you're about to tell me I've been barking up the wrong tree ? Oh dear.

Derbys: You are barking up the wrong tree as the (TF) RFA /114B is the reference the the medal roll with for his BWM/VM not his unit.

Oh dear, but I'm glad I asked as I now know where to start looking. I'm very grateful to Battiscombe and Rflory for putting me right ( and I thought I'd been very clever !). I'm guessing from this then that he was in either the 1st or 2nd West Lancs Brigades - is there anyway of getting a more precise fix on which Brigade and Battery? (Can't find anything other than his medal card on ancestry)

Thanks again

Chris

Hi Battiscombe , you mentioned that his regimental number suggested he was actually in 1st of 2nd West Lancs Brigades not 114th Battery / 25th Brigade - but another piece of evidence I had for 25th Brigade was that on his medal card it also refers to " SWB list RA / 3945 " which another forum member researched for me and came up with " XXV Brigade ". I looked at the make up of the XXV Brigade and saw there was a 114th Battery, and then made the erroneous link ( due to the coincidence of numbers) that the "114" on his BWM/VM referred to his battery. To cut that long story short - I seem to have evidence that his service number seems to point to 276th Brigade but his SWB number indicates 25th Brigade.......I'm confused.

I have checked the SWB list and that is clear - when he landed up with 25th Bde may be unclear [if at all] - I dont know how common errors are in that register. it seems slightly surprising to find him in a regular prewar Brigade, but not maybe impossible; in a similar Regular Brigade there may be 3-4? Territorials who may have served [amongst 1,300+ names] .. although in no case have I yet had this confirmed by a surviving service record [rather than another source, such as the SWB list of a record of death .. and just checking one of those, a cemetery record it seems to be an error .. with wrong unit on his gravestone ]

but in general terms he is likely to have served with W Lancs - I would suspect there is an error here unless you find some further evidence

I've also been tracking down distant relations who have confirmed without any prompting from me that William's son and grandson were born in Liverpool. The coincidence is too compelling so that I'm happy to accept that he served in either the 286th Brigade 2/2nd West Lancs or the 285th Brigade 2/1st West Lancs (both I think part of 57 Div). Heaven knows which of those he was in and his battery, but progress nonetheless.

That leaves the presumably erroneous MIC note about his SWB stating 25th Brigade - either the SWB notation is entirely wrong for him or he did receive the SWB and it's just the reference to 25th Brigade is wrong.

Many Thanks for your help, I wouldn't have got this far without it.

Regards

Chris

Dear All, just came across this old post about 114th Bty. I have an old 1914 Army List in which someone annotated all the wounded officers - 2nd Lt D J Steevens is so indicated. Can anyone please confirm this is true and give details of the date and action?

Thanks Nick

Photo of 25th Brigade at the 1914 King's Birthday review at Laffans Plain. Steevens is behind Col. Geddes. 115th Battery is at the far right side of the photo.

battiscombe: Major Usborne left 114th Battery, RFA sometime between July and October 1913, as Maj T A Cubitt was OC in October 1913, so your photo predates October 1913.

I realise many years on since this original posting. I just wanted to confirm that I think i have found a list of names of those photographed in the 114th Battery photo [posted above  2013!] , .. i dotn know if it  also matches any in DuBuissons photo album???  However, it would seem that  the 114th battery officers were then:  Lt E  Gossage-Lt T G DuBuisson- BSM Williamson – Maj T Cubitt DSO- Capt E J Marshall- Lt D G Stevens- Lt N Clery- BQMS Loughlin.. the complete list [apparently no photo] can be seen in DuBuissons papers via OgilbyMuster https://www.theogilbymuster.com/record/2268083
