Any info would be appreciated, thanks. Welcome to the GWF We always recommend you have a look at the Long Long Trail for advice on researching a soldier. The Berkshire Yeomanry page is here https://www.longlongtrail.co.uk/army/regiments-and-corps/the-british-yeomanry-regiments-of-1914-1918/berkshire-yeomanry-hungerford/ The Yeomanry were the mounted section of the Territorial Force originally formed for Home Defence. Pte Funnell joined the 2nd Line or 2/1st Berkshire Yeomanry on or around the 16th September 1914 (2182/16 September - 2197/16 September). The 2nd line of the TF was formed when 60% of the 1st line had agreed to serve overseas. It was a reserve and reinforcement unit. Clearly a proficient horseman Pte Funnell probably signed to the Imperial Obligationb (see LLT) in January 1916 and was posted to the 1st Line as a reinforcement for when they were posted on active service overseas. He landed with the main body of the 1/1 Berkshire Yeomanry at Alexandria on the 21st April 1915 (mic code 3 = Egypt). There they were dismounted and posted to the Dardanelles as infantry (LLT) on the 14th August 1915. Evacuated from the Peninsula in November 1915 they were reformed in Egypt. For all things ICC I defer to Steve but they were originally attached to the ICC in 1916 and it appears formally transferred and renumbered in June 1917. It's not entirely clear whether these men from the Yeomanry were volunteers, or 'volunteers' in the Army sense. The Command Depot at Abbassia was a sort of 'convalescent base' again see LLT for a full definition. Men, often suffering from malaria or some other tropical disease, as well as those recovering from wounds were posted from hospital to the Command Depot where they were brought back to full fitness for active duty. The Victor Ludorum (Latin) medal was awarded to the overall best competitor in all events entered in a sports day (usually accrued by points) rather than one single event. How on earth did you find all this? It all makes perfect sense. He was my Grandfather & I remember him telling me how they would ride thoroughbred horses, some were bred for racing, before he rode camels, so he was a competent horseman. Abbassia being a place for recuperation makes sense, he had to drink water from somewhere at one point that had a dead camel in it & he ended up very ill & had surgery to remove a large part of his intestine! After that he couldn't digest tomatoes or anything similar apparently. How he survived such a big operation we'll never know, but clearly his fitness played a part. He was still running marathons in his late 70's! I have inherited a few of his things, including this beautiful rose gold victor ludorum medal & a few pieces of the Great pyramid! stevenbecker Posted 28 September , 2022 Author Share Posted 28 September , 2022 (edited) Joan As stated by Ken, men from the Yeomanry were volunteered to the Camel Corps, much like the Aussies and Kiwis Most aussie accounts mention the bad boys being sent there, but these men turned out to be the hard chargers in fighting The British tried forming companies from both Infantry and Yeomanry, but the Infantry failed to be good camel soldiers, so replaced by more Yeomanry The first group under Inchbald with around 30 men arrived from the Berks around April 1916, the next wave came soon after, when the Camel Companies were increased in man power late 1916 He appears to be with this second wave of volunteers, but to fix a date has been hard to do when his group arrived at the ICC. The companies had around 130 men early on, but increased to 179 men late 1916, the date shown in most documents is Nov 1916, when these second wave groups of 30 to 40 men arrived, so he may have arrived between these dates? AndrewFrench Posted 28 September , 2022 Share Posted 28 September , 2022 Dear Joan I can confirm that JC Funnel joined the Berks Yeomanry at Yeomanry House Reading on the 16th September. He may have been initially posted to the Rserve Regiment or to the First Line regiment, but no record exists. However, in anycase all new enlistees were required to sign the ISO (otherwise they would not be enlisted). By April 1915 he was part of the original First line (now referred to as the 1/1st Berkshire Yeomanry which sailed for Egypt in April 1915, as part of the Second Mounted Division. In early August the Division was tasked to reinforce the landing at Suvla Bay in Gallipoli with each regiment sending two squadrons of 160 men each. A large rear party of the Berks Yeomanry need to stay to look after the horses at Abbassia Barracks Cairo. We know from a register compiled at the time that John FUnnell was one of the men who stayed behind as part of B Squadron In early November the B Squarion became part of the 2nd Composite Yeomanry Regiment formed at short notice to fight on the Western Frontier. If you search on the forum for "Western Frontier Force" Steve, myself and others have posted extensively on the details. I do know form a notebook the Tpr Funnell was injured but no details are recorded. I will be able to add some more in due course Please also have a look at our newly revamped website at The Berkshire Yeomanry Museum All the best Andrew Andrew French, Captain (retd) Asst. hon. curator www.berkshireyeomanrymuseum.org
AndrewFrench Posted 28 September , 2022 Share Posted 28 September , 2022 Hi Joan Forgot to ask can you posts any pics you have of your grandfather. We have a large collection of photos at the Museum, and I might be able to find a match for you. When men joined the regiment after outbreak of the war every effort was made to post men to appropriate Squadron A (Windsor) Squadron for men from East Berkshire B (Reading) Squadron for men from Reading and district D (Wantage) Squadron for men from West and North Berks Knowing where he came from would help narrow my search for you. Joan Posted 29 September , 2022 Share Posted 29 September , 2022 22 hours ago, AndrewFrench said: Dear Joan I can confirm that JC Funnel joined the Berks Yeomanry at Yeomanry House Reading on the 16th September. I will be able to add some more in due course Please also have a look at our newly revamped website at The Berkshire Yeomanry Museum All the best Andrew Andrew French, Captain (retd) Asst. hon. curator www.berkshireyeomanrymuseum.org 22 hours ago, AndrewFrench said: Hi Joan Forgot to ask can you posts any pics you have of your grandfather. Regards Andrew Hi Andrew, thank you for your replies. He would have been in the Reading group B. Would you be able to tell me the date he was injured? I was always told he drank contaminated water that had a dead camel (or worse) in & had a big operation to remove his appendix & a lot of his intestine. Amazing he even survived. I would love to know if there are any photos of him at the museum, especially in a group. He was very good with horses, he said lots of them he rode in Egypt were thoroughbreds or ex race horses. He was around 30 years old when he signed up so pretty old by most standards so maybe that's why he was left behind with the horses? He spoke Arabic by the time he got home. I think after the war he worked at Aldershot so he was still useful to the army. My Aunt, his daughter is still living so I need to contact her to ask if I can use his photographs if that's ok. Would you like me to email them to the email address on your museum website if she is in agreement? Many thanks for your help.
AndrewFrench Posted 29 September , 2022 Share Posted 29 September , 2022 Hi all I have some more information. Joan telling us her granfather ran marathons has pointed me at the report from Freburary 1915. It also shows that Pte JC Funnell was posted to the 2/1st then stationed at Bearwood Manor Shinfield. He must have been posted to the First Line shortly after this. I will send the full report of the race which mentions Pte Funnell several times IN the meantime I have nothing more than Steve has already posted except that he also had another Regimental number 70238 from 1917. I have no record of whre I got this but suspect it was from the ICC medal rolls. Finally A Berks Yeomanry Sergeant of the 8th Coy ICC. I don't know who this is it signed on back "to Douglas from Fred Sept 1916"

I read this & thought immediately could it have been there that my grandfather became ill? "Following this successful campaign the Brigade could be redeployed to the east and on 20 March 1916 the Berkshire Yeomanry returned to Mersa Matruh. Calling for Regimental Engineers they descended down inside and found to their amazement two dead camels and two dead Turks!!” This is exactly what he said, I didn't think it could be true as I thought no way could a camel would fit down a well! There's also mention of just 35 volunteers from the Berkshire regiment that joined the ICC, does that mean he was one of the 35?

On Saturday [16th Feb] a very successful cross-country race for soldiers stationed in the three counties was organised and carried out by the Berks, Bucks and Oxon Cross-country Association, Reading. Ninety-six soldiers and six civilians competed. which was the largest number who have ever taken part is a cross-country race at Reading. The event attracted a large number of spectators to see the start and finish of the rum. Forty runners, representing two Battalions of the Berks and Oxon Light Infantry, ran remarkably well, and all finished the course The B. and O.L.T. have proved themselves champion crane-country runners. Followers of the pastime will remember on January 30th at Aldershot, from a field of 800 runners the 5th Battalion won the team race and challenge shield. The first man home in the race on Saturday was Sam Woods, 13th Durhams, whilst Gent and Davis, 7th Battalion Royal Berks, finished second and third respectively. It was very regrettable, especially so the race was held in Reading. that neither the Regiment Depot nor the 7th and 8th Battalions entered teams In the race. Had Davis and Gent’s fellow soldiers supported them most probably they would have won the team race. In the forthcoming race it is to be hoped Reading soldiers will turn out in strong force. The officials were,--Starter: Capt. Hatt. Berks Yeomanry. Referee: Major Llewellyn. 8th O. and B.L.I. Judges: Capt. W Wheeler, 7th O. and B.L.I., Lieut. Headington, Berks Yeomanry Lieut. Bartrum, 8th O. and B.L.I., Lieut. R. R. Pemberton, Lieut. O. R. Dawson, 7th O. and B.L I. and Messrs. T. J. Waldron. C. Webb and A. E. Winslow, of the R.A.C. Timekeeper Mr. J. E. Resole). Berks, Bucks and Oxon Cron-counter Association. Time-keeper's recorder: Mr. H. S. Dray. R.A.C. Competitors' Stewards: Sergt.-Major S. C. E. Evans, Berks Yeomanry, Messrs. L. A. Swain and A. C. Cullum. Clerks of the course: Messrs. F. Cooper. B. Worth. P. W. Snell and P. A. Martin. Trail layers: Messrs. A. C. Cullum and .1. T. Bridges. Hon. secretary and treasurer of the Association; Mr. J. T. Bridge., who was responsible for the entire arrangement's, to whom the credit for the success of the race is largely due. THE COURSE. Owing to the Fobney meadows being under water another course had to be selected in the direction of Southcote, and this proved to be an ideal one. The runners were in view practically the whole of the distant. from Southcote-lane and Bath-road. A large crowd collected in Coley-avenue to see the start and finish, and along the course in Southcote-lane and Bath-road were numerous motorist. and cyclists. Starting by Yeomanry House in Coley-avenue, the competitor. ran down Coley-avenue and turned along the footpath to the Great Western Railway then the, crossed the wooden bridge and proceeded under the arch and along the lane into Mr. Craig’s meadow. Thence they went past Briskoe’s cottage. and turned on to the footpath towards Burfield and across Burghfield-road and into a ploughed field. entering Bath-road by the “Horn Castle” Inn. Leaving Bath-road, the field ran up Cockney Hill into Prospect Park and across the Bath-road into gravel pit field, along Southcote-lane into the large ploughed field, under the arch and finished in Coley Avenue. The Association is greatly indebted to the Mayor and Corporation of Reading for the use of Prospect Park, and to Messrs. W. E. Craig, W. Fidler and G. Denton, who kindly allowed the competitors to cross their lands. The Executive Committee of the Reading Athletic Club paced their harrier headquarters, Palmer Hall, West-street, at the disposal of the Association for dressing accommodation. The prizes were presented Mr. J. E. Beasley, of the Reading Athletic Club, to the successful competitors. Medals were awarded to the first three soldiers to complete the course. The scoring five of the winning team each received a medal presented by the Earl of Roselyn. A second set of medals was given by Mr. A. E. Winslow, and ware awarded to the second team to finish. THE RACE At 3.45 Captain Hatt started the Geld of log runners on their journey. Wood early took the lead, with Brooks. Dario, Gent Stebbings and Funnell close up. At the one mile the leaders' positions were Wood. Davis, Gent, Seymour, Funnell, Stebbings and Bellerby. Wood maintained the lead for two and a half miles, when Brooks made the running for half-a-mile. At four miles the positions were Woods, Bellerby, Brooks Willett, Seymour, Gent, Davis and Funnell. Wood, the Northern Counties A.A.A. champion. won easily. The distance was just over five miles, and the “going” heavy. – THE PLACINGS. The placings were as follows: 1. Bugler S.
