Just done some research on a local chap who enlisted in he 11th Bn Australian Infantry. Found him on the National Archives of Australia and opened his record.

WOW!

After 2 years of researching 'British' servicemen, to find a record that was a) ligible, B) intact & c) full of all the information that a researcher is looking for was just amazing.

Ah, what a pleasure it was to spend the afternoon reading through that record, including a moving, detailed report of the funeral; gun carriage, firing party and last post included.

Must agree here, AIF records are absolutely amazing, perhaps ours would be better if a certain Adolf H had not sent his bombers over in the next "conflict" . Ralph.

There is that but there also seemed to be much more info in the Aussie records; maybe down to sheer volume of numbers I suppose

Excellent AIF war diaries as well, with lots of info about units based in England and usually typed, sometimes with useful annexes.

Iv'e always found the National Archives of Australia site very user friendly and a joy to navigate, so much easier than ours. Maybe some lessons could be learned from down under!

Cheers all.
