Chester837 Posted 1 October , 2013 Posted 1 October , 2013 Just done some research on a local chap who enlisted in he 11th Bn Australian Infantry. Found him on the National Archives of Australia and opened his record. WOW! After 2 years of researching 'British' servicemen, to find a record that was a) ligible, intact & c) full of all the information that a researcher is looking for was just amazing. Ah, what a pleasure it was to spend the afternoon reading through that record, including a moving, detailed report of the funeral; gun carriage, firing party and last post included.
ralphjd Posted 1 October , 2013 Posted 1 October , 2013 Must agree here, AIF records are absolutely amazing, perhaps ours would be better if a certain Adolf H had not sent his bombers over in the next "conflict" . Ralph.
Chester837 Posted 1 October , 2013 Author Posted 1 October , 2013 There is that but there also seemed to be much more info in the Aussie records; maybe down to sheer volume of numbers I suppose
Moonraker Posted 1 October , 2013 Posted 1 October , 2013 Excellent AIF war diaries as well, with lots of info about units based in England and usually typed, sometimes with useful annexes. Moonraker
17107BM Posted 1 October , 2013 Posted 1 October , 2013 Iv'e always found the National Archives of Australia site very user friendly and a joy to navigate, so much easier than ours. Maybe some lessons could be learned from down under! Cheers all.
