michaeldr Posted 28 September , 2013 Posted 28 September , 2013 The remains of the German UB-46 Submarine as seen recently at the Çanakkale Naval Museum Command The U Boat Net has the following details http://uboat.net/wwi/boats/index.html?boat=UB+46 Four ships were sunk by UB-46 and their details are listed here http://uboat.net/wwi/boats/successes/ub46.html The museum plaque informs that the UB-46 sank 300 metres from the shore, on 7th December 1916, [see first U Boat Net link above - Struck a mine in the Bosporus at 4126N 2835E. 20 dead (all hands lost).] and that its wreckage was found in 1993 during a coal extraction operation. It further informs that what we see today is part of the torpedo room, batteries and 'forepart' and that “Despite efforts, the rest of the wreckage was not found” By the way, did you manage to spot 'Felix' in picture No.1? He was reluctant to budge and still on his perch when I came out of the Fortress and its yard
michaeldr Posted 28 September , 2013 Author Posted 28 September , 2013 Another angle on the UB-46 from the Museum's own web-site http://www.denizmuzeleri.tsk.tr/en/cdmk/sayfalar.asp?KID=396 click on 3rd photo in the 4th row
Kurt1959 Posted 29 September , 2013 Posted 29 September , 2013 Hi Michaeldr, the story of UB46 is very interesting and currently I am writing a short piece about it. Therefore it is funny that your pictures are coming up. Just as a heads up some more details. The wreckage was found 1993 after the area where it sunk had been prepared for coal exploitation. Just the front part was discovered and also the remains of two seamen who were not been identified. The wreckage was restored and brought to the Turkish Navy Museum in Besiktas in Istanbul. In 2008 the wreckage was brought to the Navy Museum at Canakkale. The two crew members were buried at the German war cemetery in Tarabya/Istanbul. The grave was finalized with a big marble headstone with the names of all 20 crew members by summer 1995. What nobody knew at that time and was just discovered by me some weeks ago was, that already 7 crew members were buried in Tarabya in separate graves. They had been washed ashore short after the sinking and were found in the months December 1916 till March 1917. I will write down the whole story in the coming weeks and will translate it in English for those who are interested. I am attaching some pictures which I got from Jochen Krüßmann, who is one of the very dedicated specialists on the German Navy. next picture of some details
Kurt1959 Posted 29 September , 2013 Posted 29 September , 2013 and one more picture of the recovery and a picture of the headstone in Tarabya.
Kurt1959 Posted 29 September , 2013 Posted 29 September , 2013 The map where UB 46 hit the mine is located on the attached map, which is taken from the book "Unter Halbmond und Kaiseradler" by Langensiepen, Krüßmann and Nottelmann. Because it is hardly readable - UB 46 was hit close to the shore at AKBUNAR. On the map it is Nr. 10 at the very left.

RobL Posted 6 October , 2013 Posted 6 October , 2013 Looks to be a lot more complete when found - and also appears to now be a bit less complete than when I saw it last year
seaJane Posted 6 October , 2013 Posted 6 October , 2013 Klaus, I am interested in Tarabya for reasons not related to the Great War - may we exchange details by PM (Private Message)? Many thanks, sJ (Jane)
michaeldr Posted 7 October , 2013 Author Posted 7 October , 2013 Looks to be a lot more complete when found - and also appears to now be a bit less complete than when I saw it last year Rob, If you still have any photographs from your visit last year, then please feel free to add them here All the best Michael
rickpreston@nasuwt.net Posted 7 October , 2013 Posted 7 October , 2013 A goodpiece of research El Shahin. I look forward to reading the final piece Richard
Kurt1959 Posted 10 October , 2013 Posted 10 October , 2013 @RobL - indeed - there is evidence that in particular copper, brass and and other valuable metal was stolen by "interested" people. However - I am surprised that the wreckage made it to Canakkale in this condition.
