johnboy Posted 25 September , 2013 Posted 25 September , 2013 I have read that there were 2 tanks at Thiepval 26,9,16. Both broke down before the battle. One did not fire a round but the other one was repaired? Does anyone know the numbers names of these tanks? Was this the first time a british tank was used in battle?
delta Posted 25 September , 2013 Posted 25 September , 2013 The two tanks in action at Thiepval were Creme de Menthe and Cordon Rouge. Both were also in action on 15 September ; the first day of which tanks were used. For more details see http://www.firsttankcrews.com/tankcrewsc1c6.htm
johnboy Posted 25 September , 2013 Author Posted 25 September , 2013 Thanks. A great link . of which you should be proud.
Mick D Posted 28 September , 2013 Posted 28 September , 2013 Where did they attack from, as all routes from the British lines would be uphill wouldn't they ? Mick
delta Posted 28 September , 2013 Posted 28 September , 2013 Almost southwest - they were on relatively level ground once they made the top of the ridge (level apart from the crump holes that is ). Creme de Menthe got into action at the Chateua and was so far north she was almost starting to go down hill. Cordon Rouge became stuck just north of the site of the Thiepval memorial
Gerald Moore Posted 29 September , 2013 Posted 29 September , 2013 The two tanks which supported the 54th Bde. on 26/9/16, in the assault on the western half of Thiepval, started from Caterpillar Wood, a small copse near the southern tip of Thiepval Wood (Q30d 3.0). C5 ditched about 100 m. north of the chateau at R25d 3.8.
Kitchener's Bugle Posted 29 September , 2013 Posted 29 September , 2013 Great Link as previously stated and very well researched and detailed... enjoyed it very much.
delta Posted 29 September , 2013 Posted 29 September , 2013 Approximate positions at end of the action shown here (C6 slightly too far north) Great Link as previously stated and very well researched and detailed... enjoyed it very much. That's most generous Hope it will act as much as a memorial as a source of info Stephen
