Lauramck Posted 24 September , 2013 Share Posted 24 September , 2013 I am trying to find accounts of the evacuation of the Serb army and refugees to Corfu following the Great retreat. I am certain that I read an account somewhere about the island of Vido and in particular about a British boat "White Sepulchre" which ferried the dead to their sea-bed grave. Yes the name stuck in my imagination. Despite a long search of my own files and Google I can find no reference to this boat any longer. Did I imagine it? Could it be in Fortier Jones book - which I seem to have misplaced? Has anyone any information on the Serbs on Corfu. I have already looked at existing threads on this forum. Sue Light Posted 25 September , 2013 Share Posted 25 September , 2013 Laura There's an account in Monica Krippner's 'The Quality of Mercy' which sounds exactly as you describe, pages 170-176. '... and nightly the aptly styled White Sepulchre sailed out to sea from Vido to commit hundreds of bodies to the depths ...' Sue
Lauramck Posted 25 September , 2013 Author Share Posted 25 September , 2013 Thank you Sue! I was beginning to think I'd made it up. I have Monica Krippner's book and have just found your reference. Laura
