Dbaulch Posted 22 September , 2013 Posted 22 September , 2013 Hi I'm heading out for a 3 day trip to the western front including Loos on 25th September to mark 98 years since the start of the battle. Is anyone planning to be there? Where should I be for zero hour and will there be any events on the day? thanks Dav
Moriaty Posted 22 September , 2013 Posted 22 September , 2013 There is normally a wreath laying at Lone Tree.
Admin Michelle Young Posted 23 September , 2013 Admin Posted 23 September , 2013 Am on point of crossing now, will be at Lone Tree early on 25th
Fattyowls Posted 23 September , 2013 Posted 23 September , 2013 Dav Just in case you need them Michelle gave me these directions to Lone Tree a couple of weeks back; we didn't go in the end but I am sure it will be really good on the 25th. "Lone Tree can be reached by driving up the main road past Dud Corner on your right, up to the roundabout where the Lidl supermarket is, and turning right, past a civilian cemetery on the right. You will drive past Le Rutoire farm and hamlet and take the track on the right just before the Vermelles-Hulluch Road. The Tree is up the track, it does get rough so you have to walk the last 100 yards." I found that Google Streetview is good for visualising the main roads at least; I'm sure you know that already. Have a great trip, Pete.
Dbaulch Posted 23 September , 2013 Author Posted 23 September , 2013 Awesome, thanks for the replies. I'll be there!
Admin Michelle Young Posted 24 September , 2013 Admin Posted 24 September , 2013 In Loos as I type, fantastic weather. Looking forward to to tomorrow. Michelle
Fattyowls Posted 24 September , 2013 Posted 24 September , 2013 Hope it's nice for tomorrow morning; let us know how it goes at Lone Tree. Pete.
Admin Michelle Young Posted 25 September , 2013 Admin Posted 25 September , 2013 Met Dav today, really great bloke and had a brilliant day around Loos. Michelle
Dbaulch Posted 25 September , 2013 Author Posted 25 September , 2013 (edited) Very fortunate to run into you when I turned up at St Mary's. thanks for all the helpful info and being so friendly. I didnt take the shell in the end, after all the horror stories I couldn't bring myself to have it in my back pack. Look forward to speaking some more soon. Dav Edited 25 September , 2013 by Dbaulch
gilles Posted 26 September , 2013 Posted 26 September , 2013 bonjour for me difficult to meet you ...this year ... perhaps the next year .. gilles
Admin Michelle Young Posted 1 October , 2013 Admin Posted 1 October , 2013 And Lone Tree on September 28th Spot the difference! Assume it is the farmer not wanting branches overhanging his fields-the man who donated the land is a diamond but this must be an adjoining landowner
Simmo Posted 5 October , 2013 Posted 5 October , 2013 Changed a bit since my first visit - 94 I think? and if anyone finds a fishing rod on the D943 its mine
Admin Michelle Young Posted 5 October , 2013 Admin Posted 5 October , 2013 That would be 96 I reckon Simon, the original tree we planted in 95 died. The present one was planted in 96 Michelle
Amor Posted 20 October , 2013 Posted 20 October , 2013 Hi, Can somebody post exactly where the Lone Tree is? Is it on the Chemin du Pont? Rgds, Alex
Fattyowls Posted 20 October , 2013 Posted 20 October , 2013 Hi, Can somebody post exactly where the Lone Tree is? Is it on the Chemin du Pont? Rgds, Alex Alex, I think the location is 50.478029,2.78197. This is following the directions I posted above which Michelle kindly gave me and zooming in on Google Maps. If I'm correct the tree is on the Chemin du Pont as you say. There is a photo of the tree accessible through Google maps but it's location looks to be about 100 m further down the track. Having said all that I didn't actually get to visit the site last time I was at Loos so maybe the friends of the Lone Tree will confirm or correct. Pete. P.S. WW1, Sport, Garden. My current interests in one. I'm impressed.
Admin Michelle Young Posted 20 October , 2013 Admin Posted 20 October , 2013 Yes Alex, I've just checked Google Earth and it is Chemin du Pont, just short of the pile of manure! I don't do sat nav so the coordinates mean nothing to me Michelle
jamesday Posted 26 November , 2013 Posted 26 November , 2013 Hi Can I hijack this and ask if anyone has the exact location of the original Lone Tree? James
Fattyowls Posted 26 November , 2013 Posted 26 November , 2013 James Paul Reed's website has some maps that provide a starter for 10. The fifth and sixth maps in the sequence have the tree marked. Hopefully somebody has a more detailed one. http://www.battlefields1418.com/loos_maps.htm Pete.
Admin Michelle Young Posted 26 November , 2013 Admin Posted 26 November , 2013 The main problem is the maps in 1915 are fairly inaccurate and the Map references vary depending on which map you use Michelle
jamesday Posted 16 December , 2013 Posted 16 December , 2013 Thanks. Yes I have those Official history Maps. I have a man in the 1/LNL who died on the German wire on 25th Sept so I suspect he may have gone right past the tree (remains). Thanks for your help
