Some members of the Forum may already be aware of the activities of the Douglas Haig Fellowship but for those who are not - the following will give you a brief introduction. if anyone is interested in joining the Fellowship, please contact me on secretary@douglashaigfellowship.org.uk for more details. Our website can be accessed here - http://douglashaigfellowship.org.uk

The Fellowship, founded in 1995, is dedicated to commemorating and studying the life of Field Marshal Earl Haig of Bemersyde and the forces he commanded. Recognising Haig as one of Scotland's foremost soldiers, the Fellowship seeks to encourage further study of Lord Haig's generalship and that of his subordinate commanders, by promoting the objective investigation of command and control of the British Army during the First World War.

In furtherance of these Objects, each year we;

Publish an acclaimed journal Records

Lay a commemorative wreath in Whitehall

Appoint a Haig Fellow who presents a paper on a relevant subject. Recent Haig Fellows have included: Professor Gary Sheffield, Major Gordon Corrigan and Major-General Julian Thompson.

As a member you will be eligible to:

Receive a free copy of our Members’ Journal: Records

Attend, each January, a commemorative meeting in Central London

Attend our annual luncheon in June when the paper by the Haig Fellow is presented.

Purpose

To commemorate and study the life of Douglas Haig (1861-1928), Field Marshal Earl Haig of Bemersyde ('the Field Marshal'), his achievements, those of the forces he commanded, and the continuing military historical lessons to be derived from all of these.

Aims

To promote a better understanding of the Field-Marshal and to give a considered response based on historical fact to any gratuitous attacks, whether verbal or written, upon his personal or official reputation, or on that of the forces he commanded. It is neither the aim of the Fellowship to indulge in hagiography, nor to avoid constructive criticism. The Fellowship seeks to encourage further objective study of:

the contribution of the Field Marshal to military reform;

his generalship and that of his subordinate commanders;

the command and control of the British Army during the First World War;

the form and working of the relationship between the political Supreme Command and Military Commanders;

the conduct of coalition operations;

the principles and application of military doctrine generally;

the efficiency of military medicine and medical services;

the public duty of care for veterans.

HAIG FELLOW

Each year a Member of the Fellowship is appointed Haig Fellow and is asked to give a paper at the Annual Lunch held close to the anniversary of the birth of Earl Haig, on 19th June (1861). Former Haig Fellows include: John Terraine, Professor Peter Simkins, Professor Gary Sheffield, Major Gordon Corrigan and Major-General Julian Thompson.

HAIG SCHOLAR

In 2008 the Fellowship established an award for a Haig Scholar, an undergraduate or Master of Arts student, who had distinguished him/herself by the excellence of their dissertation or thesis. They are selected on the recommendation of the Heads of Departments for First World War Studies. The nominee receives a prize, currently £250, and their work is published in Records, the Fellowship’s magazine. We are an unincorporated association governed by a Charter of 1995, last amended in 2013. We are Registered in England & Wales as an Educational and Memorial Charity and our affairs are managed by a Committee of Trustees elected each year at our AGM.

Membership is open to all those in sympathy with our aims.

Your website seems to have been taken over.

Yes, the website wan't renewed for a couple of reasons -:

1) the cost was quite substantial and it is possible to obtain a much cheaper and more accessible site

2) the DHF is currently looking to change its status which will also mean a slight change in its title

When we know more on progess of the above we will then be able to put together a new website.

We do, however, have a Facebook presence, under The Douglas Haig Fellowship, which details current and forthcoming events.

if you have any queries or want to make direct contact, please drop me a message at james.r.thompson-at-icloud.com
