Skipman Posted 22 September , 2013 Posted 22 September , 2013 IWM Lecture by Lyn MacDonald British author about the Passchendaele offensive, 1917, given at the Imperial War Museum, London, GB, 10/Nov/2007 In 6 x ½ hour parts I have only listened to a small part of this, but wonderful to hear her speaking.
Moriaty Posted 22 September , 2013 Posted 22 September , 2013 I was in the audience for this remarkable talk - no powerpoint slides, just notes written on bits of paper held together by a bulldog clip. Moriaty
Guest Posted 22 September , 2013 Posted 22 September , 2013 Nice one Moriaty, did you get her signature? Mike
Moriaty Posted 22 September , 2013 Posted 22 September , 2013 I've just checked the groaning bookshelves and found the copy of her Passchendaele book which she kindly signed. I remember we also had a nice chat in the IWM bookshop. Moriaty
Black Maria Posted 29 September , 2013 Posted 29 September , 2013 Although I have only listened to part of the lecture, the bit that I thought was interesting was when she said she had never heard a veteran use the word "Horror" when talking of their time in the trenches and she had talked to thousands. I wonder if this was because they did not wish to remember or describe horrific events or they did not view the events they witnessed as horrific?, I find this rather strange, as when you read men's memoirs they have no problem describing the horrors they saw and using the word horror to describe them
