WD61JG Posted 20 September , 2013 Posted 20 September , 2013 Hi I have seen part of my G-Grandfather Thomas McCall's service record, can anyone explain was he in the 3rd Battalion Cameron Highlanders and then went to the 2nd Battalion in Salonika? Also what does the other line say Royal ??? Thanks
Tom Lang Posted 20 September , 2013 Posted 20 September , 2013 I think it says "Royal Berks - 7th - Attached - Pte 12.5" blurred
Patrick Watt Posted 22 September , 2013 Posted 22 September , 2013 Hi there From this service record, he did the following: 16 May 1916 - Joined the Depot of the Cameron Highlanders (at Inverness) 17 May 1916 - Posted to the 8th Cameron Highlanders (at Stirling). This was the reserve battalion training new recruits and wounded soldiers for return to the front for the service battalions (5th, 6th and 7th Camerons) 1 Sep 1916 - Posted to the 3rd Cameron Highlanders (at Invergordon). Another training battalion feeding men to the 1st and 2nd Camerons 29 Sep 1916 - Sent to the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force at Salonika as a replacement for the 2nd Cameron Highlanders 12 May 19-- - Attached to the 7th Royal Berkshires (part of 26th Division also at Salonika) So, the 3rd and 8th Camerons were training battalions and the 2nd was a 'fighting' battalion, put simply. All the best Patrick
