bushfighter Posted 17 September , 2013 Share Posted 17 September , 2013 I have searched GWF but it appears that there has not been photo coverage before of what's inside the museum so I will offer some images. The Salonika/Macedonian campaign has some interesting coverage, as might be expected. Kalemegdan Citadel hill, Belgrade, Serbia, seen across the Sava River with the junction with the Danube River on the left. After the Sarajevo Assassinations in 1914 the Austro-Hungarians sailed their navy down the Danube to bombard Belgrade. The First World War had started! The Museum is on the highest point of the hill. bushfighter Posted 17 September , 2013 Author Share Posted 17 September , 2013 The Museum entrance. (Sorry, I put a wrong setting on the camera!) A massive assemblage of artillery pieces is outside the museum.

slick63 Posted 17 September , 2013 Share Posted 17 September , 2013 Nice, I`m just reading the book by Flora Sandes covering the Serb retreat through Albania. I`ve got a feeling I read it a few years ago but can`t be sure. From the book I took it that the Serbs were later equipped with British khaki, did they have French kit as well or is that just a general exhibit ? bushfighter Posted 18 September , 2013 Author Share Posted 18 September , 2013 Slick Thank you. I posted a few words on the French re-equipping the Serbs here: Take a look at this also: There are more photos to come on this thread, but I'm in rural Serbia where IT comms are intermittent. bushfighter Posted 18 September , 2013 Author Share Posted 18 September , 2013 The Serb soldier. The toughest infantryman in the Great War. (Sorry about the glass reflections and the camera angles used in compensation.) Tomorrow I take the train down from Nis to Skopje, Macedonia, where I will meet up with the Salonika Campaign Society battlefield tour on Sunday. Then I will begin to learn about and appreciate the ground fought over. Harry
slick63 Posted 18 September , 2013 Share Posted 18 September , 2013 Cheers bud, there`s a few pics in the book but they are very grainy. Your posted pics really do help me picture the scenes better.
bob lembke Posted 27 January , 2014 Share Posted 27 January , 2014 Boy, that brings back memories. I probably was last in that museum 40 years ago. Do they still have the 30.5 cm mortar in the courtyard? Don't remember if it was German or Austrian, but most likely it was the Skoda Moto-Moerser. I have been in "ex-Jugoslavija" about 22 times, but only once lately. Worked in Slovenija a few times. Bob Lembke
