Dear anyone who may be able to help. i am hoping that someone may be able to give any relevant information about Raymond Skipper Cardell, sitting down in the photograph. My wife's grandfather. Skipper isn't a nickname it's his genuine middle name, (Rather good isn't it?).

As far as i have been able to identify, his collar and cap badges show him to belong to the Cheshire regiment, which makes sense as he was from the Chester area. Whilst apparently he had a horse named Tootles during his army career. This unfortunately is all the information we have.

The photo shows him in shorts, does this mean he served in warmer area's and does it give any indication that he would have worked with horses.

We would be most appreciative if anyone could give us any information on where he may have served, which bttn or anything on the possible horse connection.

Raymond survived the war but alas passed on in the 1950's as a result of him being gassed during his service.

The medal index cards show only one Raymond Cardell. This man had three Regimental numbers:

South Lancashire Regiment, Nos. 5212 & 242452 (the latter being a 1917 version of the earlier number when men enlisted under Territorial Force terms received new numbers).

Cheshire Regiment 81974

This man served overseas, the overseas service commencing some time on or after 1-1-1916.

The above men appear to be in post-war uniforms as evidenced by the collar badges (not seen on most British soldiers during the war) and the man standing having what appear to be First World war medals ribbons (issued from the early 1920s, in general).

On just a brief view of other service records the 819XX numbers appear to be a series of numbers for men re-enlisting into the Cheshire Regiment in July 1919. They would, assuming they continued serving into 1920 have received a new army number.

I cannot see a service record for him, but if he continued serving in the Army after 1921 then his records will still be held by the Ministry of Defence.

His South Lancashire Regiment numbers would suggest enlistment about April 1916 and probable service overseas from the latter part of 1916.

Steve.
