ALR Posted 13 September , 2013 Posted 13 September , 2013 Does anyone have any information on 64306 Gnr H Wild Telephonist RGA. This is the information he sent on a postcard for his address but I also have a photo of him with a signallers badge on his left lower sleeve alongside a good conduct chevron for 2 years and single chevrons on his upper sleeves meaning he was a bombardier. Any information most gratefully received. Thank you, ALR
Sandie Hayes Posted 13 September , 2013 Posted 13 September , 2013 He was Mentioned In Dispatches, London Gazette 11.12.1917 (page 13076)
kevinrowlinson Posted 14 September , 2013 Posted 14 September , 2013 His number would imply that after attesting he was posted first to No1 Depot, Fort Burgoyne, Dover, arriving around the 6th November 1915. WIthout his service records it is impossible to say exactly his route, but most likely he was then posted on to "A" Siege Depot, Catterick, where he underwent his signallers course. Although most gunners served with more than one battery there is a possibility that he only served with the 145th Siege Battery which is shown when he was awarded the MSM in Jan 1919- http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/31132/supplements/977 . You should have his MICs which will indicate the references to the medal rolls which may indicate which battery he went out with. Although when he first went on his course he would have taken the signalling and telephonist exams, he would later have been considered a signaller only when the authorities separated those terms for specific roles in the RA, RE and RFC/RAF. Kevin Edit. A correction. A Siege Depot was at Bexhill at that time, before moving to Catterick later.
ALR Posted 15 September , 2013 Author Posted 15 September , 2013 Hi Kevin, I know he was at Victoria Station on 17th January 1918 waiting for the train to Dover and then at Dover waiting for the boat. I haven't got his MICs but have been on the National Archives and viewed the distorted preview records showing he received the British and Victory medals and the MCM. I haven't been able to find his service record as of yet so don't know whether it still exists or not. Thanks for the info, Amy
