The lists now cover over 3,00 Men and Soldiers.

I enclose a small sample of two Hospitals, Mercers and the Meath Hospital.

One list describes the wound recieved. This stopped in 1915 and strangely they were no Men addmitted in 1918.

Hi Don Don,

Unfortunately I haven't been able to PM you but I wonder if you have any ideas on finding out about relatives (not officers) in Irish regiments. My grandfather spent up to 2 years in hospital after being wounded in 1917 at Ypres but as his military records were lost in the Blitz I have very little information. He was in the 2nd Battalion the Leinster Regiment, which he joined at Cork in April 1914. Were Irish soldiers sent to Irish hospitals or did they go to the hospital best equipped to deal with their injuries?

Thanks,

Karen

Hello Karen,

From my research, it appears that hospitals in Ireland were used when there was a shortage of beds and care in hospitals in France and the UK mainland, particularly after a big battle.

Soldiers would arrive straight from the battlefield on hospital ships, sometimes within 24 hours of a battle. There is no evidence that Irish Soldiers were pacifically sent to hospitals in Ireland,

Regarding your GF, I will have a look at the UK hospitals for that period and will get back to you ASAP

Regards

Gerry

I remember reading in the Official History, Medical Services, that early in the war men were sent to Ireland routinely in line with every other part of the UK, but after a year (or so, will have to check) this was stopped as the travel arrangements and transport by boat were too difficult. Ireland was then restricted to men who had a particular need to be there, i.e. those whose homes were there.

Found it.

'As a rule invalids for Ireland were disembarked at Southampton or Dover, conveyed by ambulance train to Holyhead, and embarked on a hospital ship there, under the control of the D.M.S. embarkation. This method of transferring patients to Ireland, however, did not work well and was abandoned. Arrangements were then made for concentrating Irish sick and wounded in hospitals in the South of England and, when a sufficient number had accumulated, they were embarked in a hospital ship at Southampton or Liverpool and conveyed thence to Dublin'

Offical History, Medical Services, Volume 1, page 104.

Thank you! All very interesting.

I have seen photos of soldiers on stretchers at Brighton station, still covered in mud, while they waited onward transport, and wondered what happened next. Hopefully most ended up in hospital where relatives could visit.

HI Don

I'd love any details you have of Alexander Snell. He was a Meath Hospital on 3rd September 1916 with a gunshot wound. He was an Australian soldier in the 21st Battalion AIF

Excellent work.

You will have Frederick Charles Keenor, Acting Sgt., 19281 (or maybe 628, or F/653 or 2387) 17th Btn Middlesex Regiment.

He was in Dublin Castle Red Cross Hospital from 4/8/16 to 31/8/16 then Princess Patricia Hospital, Bray from 31/8/16 to 15/9/16 with GSW Left Thigh.

He nearly lost his leg, but it was saved by the hard work of the Irish surgeons and nursing staff.

On April 23rd 1927, he lifted the FA Cup at Wembley as captain of the victorious Cardiff City team.

Hi Don, don't know how to PM you through this, however my Grandfather, William McKell was nursed in a Dublin hospital for 6 months after being wounded on the Somme in November 1916. I know from newspaper report of 10 Nov 1916 that he was in hospital then. It would be amazing if you could find his records. He was in West Riding Reg. Many thanks, Gaynor
