Good Day All,

13379 Sgt. Thomas Bird Dennis from Hucknall remembered today on the GWF, thought you might like to see some further information.

The 9th Battalion diary records,

9/9/15

BIENVILLERS. The night of the 8th/9th September was the quietest we have yet had. In the afternoon HQ was shelled. Two Sergeants and two Privates who were in a dug out were killed. Six shells in all landed near, and seemed to come from a bearing about 148° true, probably from a German Battery near LA BRAYELLE FARM. No doubt that there is a continual stream of orderlies, and that bombers were also being practised nearby attracted the attention of the German gunners.

Thomas would have been one of the Sergeants the other men were,

14474 L/Sgt. Thomas Bishop of Tudor Road, Leicester

14044 Pte. John Cook of Thron Street, Woodville

16680 Pte. Walter Shaw of Swannington

Rest in peace lads, you are not forgotten.

Regards.

Llew.

Thanks for the additional info Lew, it's always nice to see a bit of the background to the name at the top of the page.

Thomas Bird Dennis was born in Hucknall Torkard, Notts in October 1890. He was a Coal Miner and, by the age of 20, had moved to Rotherham, Yorkshire.

In February 1913 he married Amelia Hesketh from Hucknall Torkard, The couple had a son, Donald, in 1914.

Donald, like his father, was killed in action. He was 2nd Btn, Sherwood Forresters and was killed at Anzio, Italy in February 1944.

Amelia never remarried and died in Basford in 1974, aged 94.
