129th Baluchis

As a follow up to my query about Khudadad Khan VC does anyone know the exact location of the famous photograph of his unit , 129th Baluchis, which is frequently reproduced to illustrate the Indian Corps on the Western Front? The Baluchis are dug-in on the side of a road opposite some bulidings. It is IWM Q60744 and appears, for example on p16 of the Battleground Europe 'Messines Ridge' book. I was hoping to take a 'then and now' picture at some point.

I believe that the picture shows the Punjabi Mussalman company of the 129th Baluchis and was taken on the outskirts of Wytschaete at the end of October 1914. The men are manning a temporary parapet.

If (and it's a big if ) this (posed)photo was taken at Wijtschaete,It would have been taken on the road from Wijtschaete to Oostaverne. Depending on the actual date of the photo ,it could be as far east as Hollebeke or as north as (near) St.Elooi.

Personally, I'd say it was on the road between Wijtshaete and Oostaverne, near the site of Staenyzer Cabt. (on the road to Torreken farm cemetery).Just (200 m) before the crossroads and approx. 3-400m from the village square.

I'll scan a modern 1:20,000 map and mark out where I think the photo was taken if you want, Mark, and send it you with the other info. I promised.

Dave.
