Shell Making - Heckla Factory in Sheffield, South Yorkshire. (6.55)

" CU white-hot shell on floor. Pan as it is lifted by chain & clamp held by worker; lowered into machine where further shaped; removed (sequence is very dark). ECU shell spinning as machine smoothes point; sparks & molten metal fly. Pull back on same w/ worker watching. CU workers fit end on shell hanging from chains; bang it w/ mallets. 3 men push it away. Next shot should be 1st: white-hot shell rises up in opening from furnace; is pulled out. Different view man lifting it w/ clamp. Worker checking shell; using various rings etc.

Great shot! GV busy factory; seen from height: much activity. Workers below inspect rows of many shells on long tables; machines on sides; back; shells hanging from hooks move up & down on pulleys. Next, tracking shot looking down at factory floor; showing workers at tables w/ shells of various sizes. Cut to dark room w/ white glow / flame; workers poke at it. Something on chain; like bucket; is moved into white spot; glow becomes larger; sparks fly! CU 2 workers lower another cylinder over shell; then remove. Workers load truck or large crate like train car. Workers walk back & forth. Workers on factory floor; shell lifted by pulley / chain rises in FG; swings away.

American cataloguer notes: "Some great industry shots! Workers are all males; for some reason kept out of active military service
