BereniceUK Posted 2 September , 2013 Posted 2 September , 2013 I can't indentify this man from what is inscribed on the headstone below, in Blackrod Cemetery, Lancashire. He's named on Blackrod's war memorial as John C. Partington. And does anyone know what L.C.V. might be an abbreviation of? 'V' for Volunteers? The CWGC database seems to give me two to choose from plus an outsider. 10959 Lance Corporal John Partington, Machine Gun Corps (Infantry). Died 14.9.1916. 56795 Sapper J.Partington, Royal Engineers. Died 15.9.1916. There's also R/19742 Rifleman Jonothan Partington, King's Royal Rifle Corps. Died 15.9.1916.
jay dubaya Posted 2 September , 2013 Posted 2 September , 2013 Would suggest Spr. J. Partington, service papers available on ancestry Jon
sotonmate Posted 2 September , 2013 Posted 2 September , 2013 Sapper born and enlisted Bolton. KRRC born and resident Littleborough (Manch?) enlisted Rochdale. Suggest that the LCV will be a qualification of some kind.
jay dubaya Posted 2 September , 2013 Posted 2 September , 2013 Papers say Saddler, nothing jumped out regarding LCV but I did only have a quick browse
jay dubaya Posted 2 September , 2013 Posted 2 September , 2013 He was 'time expired' King's Liverpool when he attested 11th November 1914
BereniceUK Posted 2 September , 2013 Author Posted 2 September , 2013 How about City of Liverpool Volunteer Guard but instead of C.L.V. being inscribed someone remembered it wrongly? http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=184638
BereniceUK Posted 2 September , 2013 Author Posted 2 September , 2013 Jiminy! You may have cracked it.
