Thomas08 Posted 1 September , 2013 Posted 1 September , 2013 Please find attached photo of officers of the 1/5th Battallion dated June 1917 taken from JD Hills record of the 1/5th Battalion, the Leicestershire Regiment T.F. My grandfather Godwin Edward Banwell and my great uncle William Maurice Cole served with the 1/5ths. Both joined straight from school (Merchant Taylors OTC). During the 14/18 war there were at one time or another 7 old merchant taylors serving as officers in the Battalion the 5th Leicestershire Regiment. William Maurice Cole, Percy Measures, Cyril Barnard Wilson Buck who were all killed in action whilst the 4 remaining survived the war, Godwin Edward Banwell, John Cridland Barrett, John David Hills and Donald Burman Petch. I would be grateful if anyone could help me put names to the faces contained within the photo, even more so if some of the old merchant taylors were included. Many thanks Jon
David_Blanchard Posted 1 September , 2013 Posted 1 September , 2013 Just wondered if you have Matthew Richardson's history of the territorial battalions of the Leicestershire Regiment? There are plenty of photographs in this book which may talley with the officers in the photo above.
Thomas08 Posted 1 September , 2013 Author Posted 1 September , 2013 Thanks I had not heard of this book ............onto to Amazon to check it out now.

I hope you do not mind me asking, but would it be possible to have a copy of the 1/5 transcribed war diary entries on a word document. My uncle James Langham Whitworth fought with 1/5 Leicestershire regiment throughout WW1. He was awarded the Croix de Guerre Silver star for gallantry on the field of battle on 29th September 1918. I really would be most grateful to you. Kind regards Pauline Haycock
