Hi all,

I have ww1 medals of WW1 240776 Pte J Barrell, I was hoping to find medal role & service record

WW1 240776 Pte Barrell served in the Suffolk pals and then went on to serve in the Machine Gun Corps.

Any help would be great.

The number 240776 was issued to the 5th Battalion of the Suffolk Regiment as part of the 1917 re-numbering of the Territorial Force. Your man was with the 1/5 Battalion as it served overseas in Egypt and Palestine with 163 Brigade of 54 Division,as opposed to 2/5 and 3/5 Battalions which were using the same number sequence but which saw only home service. He later transferred to the Machine Gun Corps with number 149640. It is possible that he transferred to his Brigade Machine Gun Company (163) later.

There is no apparent service or pension record for the soldier. His Medal Index Card shows his name to be John.
