SRD Posted 30 August , 2013 Posted 30 August , 2013 I have a Charlotte Ann Lefeaux born 1881 in Brighton, Sussex to John & Sarah. She appears in the family home in 1881 & 1891 and there is a FreeBMD death record dated 1961 in Brighton. The family understand that she served as a nurse during WWI, possibly with Edith Cavell. There is evidence (though I've not seen it) of a War Card showing her in Belgium. Apparently she received no British awards as she worked under the auspices of the Belgian authorities. Please can anyone help with any information that might help me find out more about her? Thanks.

Sue Light Posted 30 August , 2013 Posted 30 August , 2013 Charlotte Lefeaux trained as a nurse between 1907 and 1909 at Brownlow Hill Hospital, Liverpool. She would not have been accepted for service with the British nursing services as her training was too short and uncertificated, though it was accepted as adequate for registration as a nurse in later years. Her address in 1928 was 138a Holland Road, Kensington, London, W.14. She must have received some British medals as she has a medal index card at The National Archives as working with 'Nurse Cavel's Unit.' [their spelling] This suggests that she was working under the Belgian Red Cross - British civilian women with the BRC received British medals, while those with the French Red Cross didn't. I don't know of any other official sources of records that might give more information. Sue

Sue Light Posted 31 August , 2013 Posted 31 August , 2013 Can it be found on Ancestry? No, unfortunately the main run of women's medal index cards have never been on Ancestry - it's available at TNA: TNA Medal Index Cards Sue
royalredcross Posted 31 August , 2013 Posted 31 August , 2013 If you download the Medal Index card, it will show whether she was issued with British medals or not. NGG
SRD Posted 31 August , 2013 Author Posted 31 August , 2013 Thanks again. Unfortunately I'm not in a financial position to download stuff from the National Archive but I think there's sufficient information here to confirm the family story.
Sue Light Posted 31 August , 2013 Posted 31 August , 2013 And my comment on FRC not receiving British medals was a complete load of tosh - I meant to say that they didn't receive the 1914 Star. I seem to remember that I have the French Red Cross medal roll right in front of me Sue
