Sunnylew75 Posted 29 August , 2013 Posted 29 August , 2013 Hopefully this is the right forum - I'm looking into the history of a man, but I couldn't find anywhere else that seemed appropriate. I came across my grandfather's uncle in the Red Cross records index at an online site. There's very little information on where exactly the information comes from, but it appears to be for 1914, and says "Department: Contract Cancelled", and "Service: Civilian". He was a coach builder (listed on the index) and I knew he went on to make planes during the war, but I wonder what kind of a record there would be for a Red Cross member from before the war? His number is 3777, and some websites say that within a year of the founding of the Red Cross in 1909 there were over 7000 members, so I feel that he may have been involved for a few years by the time his contract was cancelled.. That coupled with his non-appearance on the 1911 Census leads me to wonder whether he was away at some conflict at the time. Does anyone know how good the records were before the war? Do they even still exist?
