All,

A request for information if I may, I was hoping somebody would be able to point me towards any personal accounts by Subalterns from the Regular Army serving in the opening 1914 campaign? Any accounts would be very much appreciated if I were to be slightly more specific I would ask for accounts written by Cavalry Officers but these may not exist.

Thank you in advance

Regards

DW

You could try entering "cavalry" as a search term on the Imperial War Museum and Liddle Collection sites. These are the best "personal accounts" archives. Of course, you would then need to visit to read the documents.

There is Captain Balfour's account, Adjutant of the 5th Dragoon Guards. This can be found at the National Archives under WO95/1109.

Diary of the Retirement from Mons, August 1914 by Capt. H. B. Bartram, RHA. While not a cavalry officer, his battery, E/RHA, served with the 1st Cavalry Division during the retreat from Mons.
