mickdavis Posted 27 August , 2013 Posted 27 August , 2013 Just letting people know that CCI will be issuing the first of its WWI flying site location maps with the autumn issue. The first sheets are for Northern England and Cheshire/Lancashire/Cumbria. The locations (which include non-flying sites as well as aerodromes etc) are marked on contemporary OS quarter inch sheets, printed in full colour and back to back on A2 paper of the quality used for the journal. Following the educational nature of the Society's charitable status, we'd like to make them available to interested people outside the society, but need to estimate the print run. If any members of this forum are interested, they can contact me for details.
fetubi Posted 29 August , 2013 Posted 29 August , 2013 Sounds like a fantastic opportunity. Well done.
Airshipped Posted 29 August , 2013 Posted 29 August , 2013 Really looking forward to it. Given the geographical area mentioned will it also include the Vickers naval construction airship works at Barrow? Or will it be a map of kite balloon, airship, seaplane and aeroplane stations and aerodromes?
green_acorn Posted 30 August , 2013 Posted 30 August , 2013 Mick, Who is CCI? I googled it and don't think you are associated with www.cci-ammunition.com/ or Cardiovascular Credentialing International | or Canine Companions for Independence and so on.Cheers,\Hendo
topgun1918 Posted 30 August , 2013 Posted 30 August , 2013 HendoCCI is the abbreviation for Cross and Cockade International.Graeme
anthony osborne Posted 30 August , 2013 Posted 30 August , 2013 Thanks for letting us know - will be very interesting I'm sure. Best regards, Ant
rickpreston@nasuwt.net Posted 30 August , 2013 Posted 30 August , 2013 The Cumbria branch of th WFA are holding a special day on 28th September 2014 to consider CUMBRIA'S CONTRIBUTION TO THE GREAT WAR. It is being held at Shap Wells Hotel. One of the speakers will be exploring the role of Vickers and Barrow in the Great War. It should be a good day Richard
rickpreston@nasuwt.net Posted 30 August , 2013 Posted 30 August , 2013 How can one get hold of these sheets being published in the autumn issue? Richard
mickdavis Posted 30 August , 2013 Author Posted 30 August , 2013 The maps cannot be synoptic because sites came and went and some changed function. Walney Island is there, as are Cavednish Dock and Flookburgh. The map key identifies : service flying sites/sites surveyed as possible aerodromes but not taken up/civilian sites closed at or before the outbreak of war/sites licensed during 1919 for civilian use by Avro 504s etc/sites used by the services during pre-war exercises or whole unit movements/HD related sites, such as squadron searchlights & sound mirrors/support sites such as Stores Depots, Stores Distributing Parks, Port Detachments, ARDs on non-aerodrome sites/ground schools/ war channel marker buoys within which Marine Ops units flew. CCI members will receive copies with their journals. We're looking to knock them out to non-members at about £1.00 + pp. They'll be issued at quarterly intervals. The second pair will be Yorkshire/Lincolnshire and N Wales.
mickdavis Posted 30 August , 2013 Author Posted 30 August , 2013 Forgot to say - details will be posted on our website www.crossandcockade.com
