oxlade134 Posted 26 August , 2013 Posted 26 August , 2013 I am trying to understand if this medal card has any additional information in the added notes can anybody help? I have the SWB index so know he was wounded and discharge Nov 1918 from Iniskilling Fusilliers Cheers Roger
jay dubaya Posted 26 August , 2013 Posted 26 August , 2013 Roger, the only bit I can say for certain is that the medals were returned for adjustment to the initials of the recipient, this appears to have been done on 9th August 1923 and returned to recipient on 24th september 1923. I'm currently looking at a man who was transferred to the LC on the 11th March 1918 with the number 534421, this may suggest that your man was transferred to the LC before this date. Jon
oxlade134 Posted 26 August , 2013 Author Posted 26 August , 2013 Jon, Thanks for that information, the abbreviations make sense now with the reason given by yourself. The Regt. number info also useful! I had been thinking this man was late to go overseas ie 1916 onwards even though he enlisted (SWB index) 13 Mar 1914 also no 1914-15 Star awarded. I will take a look through newspaper articles to see if his wounding pinpoints anything. Roger
Admin spof Posted 27 August , 2013 Admin Posted 27 August , 2013 The LC number was allocated between Oct 1917 and Feb 1918. He may not have signed the Imperial Servce Obligation in which TF men agreed to serve overseas. This was cancelled with the introduction of conscription when all TF men became aligible for service abroad. That would explain the gap between enlisting and going to France. Interestingly, the Army Service Numbers website shows 8195 enlisting in the 14th London Regiment in July 1916. Maybe he served at home with another battalion and was transferred to the 14th at that time.Without a service record, that will be hard to find unless he is mentioned in local papers or a unit near where he lived is mentioned.
oxlade134 Posted 27 August , 2013 Author Posted 27 August , 2013 Yes I agree I didnt think about the possibility of him not agreeing to serve overseas and in 1916 the cancelling of the TF order, even though I did know about it. I was blinded by Army records in this case this SWB sheet which gives the enlistment date as 30 Mar 1914 and the medal card The London Scottish as his first regiment for which he earned medals. I was planning to contact Paul Nixon re the number discrepancy with his blog, but think your theory makes sense he was originally with another TF unit maybe. he was born 1896 so 1914 about the earliest he could have enlisted. Thanks for taking the time to think this through Roger
