SilverFox100 Posted 25 August , 2013 Posted 25 August , 2013 I am looking for more information into a Lt. Warine Frederick Martindale, of the 1st battalion of the Scots Guards. He died on the 15th September 1916. I believe at the battle of Flers Courcelette, battle of the Somme. I have read what I can find on this battle, but little mentions what the 1st battalion of the Scots Guards was involved in the particulars of this battle. I would like to find out what happened to him and where he fell. I know he is remembered on the Thiepal Memorial so has no known grave. He is a cousin of my family and It would be great to find out more. I know this battle is where the first use of tanks was. If anybody can help with what his battalion was involved in the battle, what trenches he would have fought in etc., basically anything, I would appreciate. Many thanks. Mike
Steven Broomfield Posted 26 August , 2013 Posted 26 August , 2013 Mike: the regimental history of the Scots Guards in the Great War isn't very good (certainly far less informative than pretty well all the other Guards histories), but there is a report on the action in which he died, although he himself receives nothing more than a mention in the list of killed. I see you have too few posts to have the ability to send Personal Messages: I suggest you make a total of 5 posts (saying "Hello"to me will be 1), then drop me a PM with an e-mail address and I can photograph and e-mail you the relevant pages. Don't post an e-mail address on the open forum.

Most of what I have been looking for at the archives has not been available to download to date and has been going on the ever increasing sized list of wants for when I visit Kew later in the year, so this makes a change. I think I will print this off and enlarge and read with the maps in front of me. I will also take Graeme's advice. Regards. Mike
