mutley Posted 23 August , 2013 Posted 23 August , 2013 Can anybody give me any pointers on how the above unit would have been employed or a link to their War Diary. I have tried the search facility on the TNA website but cant find anything, mind you I find it a pretty useless search facility anyway. I am researching a Sapper who won the MM for Passchendaele gazetted in January 1918. Any help appreciated, thanks Mutley
Ron Clifton Posted 23 August , 2013 Posted 23 August , 2013 Hello Mutley The War Diary is in this file: WO 95/328 20 Army Troop Company Royal Engineers 1914 Aug. - 1919 Apr. During the Third Battles of Ypres the company was part of Fifth Army. Ron
mutley Posted 24 August , 2013 Author Posted 24 August , 2013 Does anyone know how AT Companies were employed? On the Long Long Trail it says that they were employed in behind the lines bridging and water works duties, so I'm struggling to see how my chap won the MM. Mutley
Ron Clifton Posted 24 August , 2013 Posted 24 August , 2013 Mutley A division had three Field Companies RE to cope with its immediate needs. When a bit of additional support was required, they could usually count ofn at least one AT Company to help them. Try to find a copy of this book: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Rank-Pay-Sapper-Nuneaton-Engineers/dp/0952148838/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1377365158&sr=1-2&keywords=%22with+the+rank+and+pay+of+a+sapper%22 The author's father served in the company and the book is based on his diary. Although not divisional troops, they certainly could operate close to the front and, to take just one example, helping to rescue wounded men when a bridge collapsed is just the sort of action which might earn a MM. stevem49 Posted 24 August , 2013 Posted 24 August , 2013 http://www.ypressalient.co.uk/War%20Diaries/Arthur%20Daulman%20wd.htm This may give you an idea. Arthur's company acted as Army troop Coy.
