rolt968 Posted 19 August , 2013 Posted 19 August , 2013 I would be interested to know if anyone has seen Lyon Jeffery commemorated on a war memorial anywhere (except Harris Academy Dundee, which I know about). His full name was Lyon Ogilvy Duncan Jeffery, but I have seen the surname misspelled "Jeffrey". He went to France with 1/5 Black Watch on 1 November 1914. He was killed serving with 4/5 Black Watch on either 26 or 27 September 1917 (sources disagree). He is commemorated at Tyne Cot. He was born in Newtyle (Angus) and was living there aged 14 at the time of the 1911 census. I found two photographs of him among a group of other pictures of soldiers from Newtyle and had originally thought that he had survived, since his name is not on the Newtyle war memorial. The Newtyle war memorial is rather unusual since new panels were put on incorporating both the WW1 and WW2 casualties in undifferentiated alphabetical order after WW2. On the Scottish War Memorials Project website, there is a list from the Perthshire Advertiser (1920) of the original names. Lyon Jeffery is not in that, so he wasn't left off by mistake when the new plaques were made. He is on the Harris Academy (Dundee) war memorial, but this does not mean a move to Dundee between 1911 and 1914. Until recently Newtyle pupils completed their secondary education at Harris Academy. I have checked the Dundee city roll of honour and he is not on that. Any information about where (if anywhere) he is commemorated on a war memorial would be appreciated. Roger.
Malcolm Posted 19 August , 2013 Posted 19 August , 2013 L Jeffery is listed in SDITGW as born in FORFAR, enlisted in NEWTILE and listed as KIA. Have you looked at FORFAR? Aye Malcolm
rolt968 Posted 19 August , 2013 Author Posted 19 August , 2013 I haven't found him on the Forfar and District Roll of Honour which is posted on WMP in association with the Balmashanner (Forfar town) memorial, but there is also a list on the memorial in the town hall, which may be different. Roger.
