I cant see if this has been covered on the forum but a couple of rats have been arrested for trying to flog the plates they stole from the memorial. The scrap merchant reported them after confiscating the plates. See below

"Designed ... to be theft resistant".

Worked well then.

On the bright side, it's nice to see a good news story: plaques recovered and perps apprehended.

Thanks for posting.

Just to let you know, Milnathort's Orwell War Memorial will be re-dedicated on Saturday 7 June 2014 at 10am.

Last summer almost immediately after the 5 bronze plaques had been returned to the Orwell War Memorial after conservation, two of the plaques were stolen and others damaged. The stolen plaques were retrieved when the thieves tried to sell them for scrap. Two of the three that had been stolen have been re-cast as they were beyond repair, another was removed from the memorial and has been re-cast and the World War Two one only had scratches and damaged fittings and has been salvaged and re-mounted. This has all added another £7000 to the costs of the renovation project.

Congratulations to all involved in the Orwell/ Milnathort War Memorial Project

The rodent who did this got 12 months imprisonment yesterday. He tried to blame someone else but the fact was that he was on camera at the scrapyard and in possesion of the plaques .he was described as "the worst of the worst".
