John_Farrar Posted 18 August , 2013 Posted 18 August , 2013 Hello I am in the process of transcribing pages of a War Diary and have come across the word 'grm' Quote "B,C & D Batteries moved 1 grm each into new position" Can anyone tell me what 'grm' stands for please? Many thanks John
Tom Morgan Posted 18 August , 2013 Posted 18 August , 2013 Are you transcribing a handwritten document, John? If so, could it be "gun"? Tom
johnboy Posted 18 August , 2013 Posted 18 August , 2013 You may be better posting the page. There are many on here that are good at deciphering handwriting and the context of it might be helpful,
Ron Clifton Posted 19 August , 2013 Posted 19 August , 2013 I agree with Tom - "gun" fits the context of a move to new positions. Ron
John_Farrar Posted 19 August , 2013 Author Posted 19 August , 2013 Many thanks for your replies. Yes, 'gun' does seem to be the obvious choice but the writing does not suggest that. Image attached for you. Thank you again John
keithfazzani Posted 19 August , 2013 Posted 19 August , 2013 Look at the word "under" in the line a above, the u starts with an upstroke which is probably the bit that looks like "r" the "u" in "gun" is scribbled, but the "n" is identical.
John_Farrar Posted 19 August , 2013 Author Posted 19 August , 2013 Good spot Keith. Gun it is which makes sense anyway. Much obliged John
PhilB Posted 19 August , 2013 Posted 19 August , 2013 Although "gun" makes sense, I would say that the "under" makes it less likely to be "gun". If he`d wanted to, he could equally well have started the U in gun just like he started the U in under?
johnboy Posted 19 August , 2013 Posted 19 August , 2013 GMN? Gun Mounted/ mounting something. Perhaps a bigger section of the report is needed for writing comparison.
John_Farrar Posted 19 August , 2013 Author Posted 19 August , 2013 Thank you all for your input over my little query. I think that this example from an earlier date confirms the word is 'gun/s' Thanks again John
johnboy Posted 19 August , 2013 Posted 19 August , 2013 Could the g be a j? the g in brigade looks different in both pages,
