MYMONSTAR Posted 16 August , 2013 Posted 16 August , 2013 hi all , ive another bit of advise to ask.i normaly stick to buying soldiers medals but I bought a trio of WW1 naval medals, awarded to H E Clayton Ord RN Serial Number J 36354, problem is I tried on ancestry and the search just came back saying that the navy number did not exist. the number on the medals was the exact number I entered so I don't know what has went wrong. coul anyone shine a bit of light on this for me . thank you
Admin spof Posted 16 August , 2013 Admin Posted 16 August , 2013 Naval medal rolls aren't on Ancestry. You need to download them in large chunks from The National Archives in ADM 171
horatio2 Posted 16 August , 2013 Posted 16 August , 2013 The RN Medal Roll only records that he was issued with the trio you hold, sent to him post-war while serving in HMS VICTORY. His service record is here:- http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/SearchUI/Details?uri=D6935295. His enlistment papers are held at the Fleet Air Arm Museum.
MYMONSTAR Posted 16 August , 2013 Author Posted 16 August , 2013 that's great thanks Horatio2 ive just paid for and received the page.
Sepoy Posted 16 August , 2013 Posted 16 August , 2013 They may not be Medal Cards, but Ancestry does have access to the Royal Naval Medal Rolls, detailing the issue of World War One Medals, including the Royal Naval issued Silver War Badges. These can be searched, by name, here http://search.ancest....aspx?dbid=1687 This also gives access to many Naval issue medals awarded between 1793 and 1972. As mentioned by SPOF in quote 2 these Medal Rolls (ADM 171) can be download, for free, from the National Archives, but they are not search-able by name. Sepoy

MYMONSTAR Posted 16 August , 2013 Author Posted 16 August , 2013 Well fancy that he was only 12 years old when he joined the navy. what would a 12 year old boys job be on a ship then . here is his page --bia-filer2.web.local-DODelFiles2-ADM-188-719-0-354.pdf
ARABIS Posted 17 August , 2013 Posted 17 August , 2013 He was 15 when he joined the RN as a Boy II, born in 1899, his adult service started in 1917 for a twelve year engagement.
