Sidearm Posted 14 August , 2013 Posted 14 August , 2013 Saw this on the BBC Wales website today: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-mid-wales-23678768 It's a tragic tale and a clear injustice, IMHO, so given the context, am I wrong to laugh at this appalling use of English: "Gunner Robert Corfield died in a training accident before being sent to the front" ?
John_Hartley Posted 14 August , 2013 Posted 14 August , 2013 No injustice as such. There was a simple clerical mistake at the time. Robert Corfield's name was submitted to CWGC/MoD by the In From the Cold Project some considerable time back and is simply waiting for the MoD to approve the submission.
Scalyback Posted 14 August , 2013 Posted 14 August , 2013 How long is the back log for in from the cold submissions? Average wait in this case or delays for unknown reasons. I have worked near, been drunk in and examined in the temple of peace. I never knew of the national book of remembrance there. It is known locally as city hall. Given the reason and history why the building was built, Cardiff city need to rethink pronto. Fully aware of the national war memorial in the same grounds but noting of this! Webpage for it.http://www.templeofpeaceandhealth.com/The%20Crypt.html No mention on access etc. Shall contact the place tomorrow.
John_Hartley Posted 14 August , 2013 Posted 14 August , 2013 How long is the back log for in from the cold submissions? Pretty long at present with the army, due to ongoing staffing problems. Less of a problem with the airforce and navy folk.
Aneurin Posted 15 August , 2013 Posted 15 August , 2013 The Temple of Peace is an entirely different building from Cardiff City Hall. It has nothing to do with the city council, so it's hard to know what they can "rethink pronto". The location of the Welsh National Book of Remembrance there is widely known. It is evident that the source that was used for the Army was Soldiers Died in the Great War, so there will be very many like Robert Corfield who are not included. It purports to include all men of Welsh birth or parentage but, though there are Canadians and New Zealanders listed, there are no Australians. It also includes all the men who died serving in Welsh regiments, irrespective of their place of birth. Gwyn
Hywyn Posted 15 August , 2013 Posted 15 August , 2013 I read the OP to be nothing at all to do with 'in from the cold', Temple of Peace etc but the fact that the photo caption reads as if Gunner Coldfield died whilst in training. And was then sent to the front. Hywyn
