Great War helmet paint restoration

I have just purchased Great War German helmet that has been reprinted at some point, I don't have it yet but the seller believes that the original paint is underneath !!

Does any of you kind folk know a way to remove the new paint but keep the original underneath ??

Careful application of acetone/paint stripper might work, it depends on what it has been repainted with. Test a small area first and see what happens, though stripping paint is likely to impact on any paint underneath.

I'm going to start with acetone/thinners and that doesn't work I'll have a gentle try with paint stripper, I will post results if all goes well
