Gypsyjoe Posted 14 August , 2013 Posted 14 August , 2013 Afternoon All I hope I'm on the right forum with this, if not sorry. I'm hopping someone can help me decipher my great great uncle records here. What I do know is he was Royal flying corps and air force. I can make out that he was attached to something in Henley and No 1 motor transport depot which I've been told was probably in France. I'm presuming that the PT 26441 is his service number but if it is what does the PI stand for please? I can see he was a 2nd Leut as well but as far as trying to work out the rest I've no idea. Hope someone can advise. Joe I have further pages to this document here is page 2
Charpoi Warrior Posted 14 August , 2013 Posted 14 August , 2013 (edited) Some thoughts: He was born in 1873* so was 41 when war broke out. He was awarded the Long Service (Yeomanry) medal so was probably in the pre-War Territorial Force before joining the RFC/RAF: I have no idea what the requirement for that medal was. From 1910 to 1918 he was a general manager at a firm in Elizabeth Street, London and he had engineering/motor transport experience. He was a civilian until 1918 and was commissioned on 1st Mar 1918, when he was 45, one month before the RFC became the RAF. My suggestion would be he was brought in to organise logistics, given his age and background. There is a Mentioned in Despatches dated 29th August 1919 which would suggest he was either in Ireland or Russia at that time. This is of course speculation and no doubt someone with actual knowledge will correct me. *possibly 1893, but it looks like 1873 to me. Edited 14 August , 2013 by Charpoi Warrior
Gypsyjoe Posted 15 August , 2013 Author Posted 15 August , 2013 Hey Sergeant Major Thanks I was really only after the military side of things. I have his birthday already, he was actually born in Aldershot as his father was in the Army there. Elizabeth street was actually his home address but I don't believe it was his work address though I could be wrong. I'm wondering what the authorities mean?
