Chrysostom Posted 12 August , 2013 Posted 12 August , 2013 We have begun researching the names on the War memorial in our church. This is the Victoria park War Memorial in St Chrysostom's Church, Manchester. The names on the memorial can be found here: http://www.stchrysostoms.co.uk/ then go to 'and more' tab > war memorial. No doubt we will have difficulties, and we've come up with one already: Frederick DENNLER is listed - but we cannot find anything whatsoever about him. He does not appear on the 1911 Census. He does not appear in the Commonwealth War graves list... Please can anyone help us to find out who he was. Thanks
MickLeeds Posted 12 August , 2013 Posted 12 August , 2013 There is a medal index card for a L/Cpl Frederick Demmler (250828), Manchester Regiment. Killed 27th September 1918, 1/7th Bn Manchester Regiment. He has a probate record on Ancestry under the name Frederick Otto Hermann Demmler. Address: 2 January Street, Chorlton upon Medlock. Widow: Olive Emily Demmler. There is also a marriage record available for 1915 at St Chrysostom's Church, Manchester. Mick.

I'm sure you'll find the following links useful, http://www.themanchesters.org/7th%20batt.htm http://archive.org/details/sevenmanchester00wilsuoft Jonny
IPT Posted 12 August , 2013 Posted 12 August , 2013 January Street, (along with February St, March St etc), ran off Upper Brook Street, which is the location of St Chrysostom's.
Chrysostom Posted 12 August , 2013 Author Posted 12 August , 2013 Ah! Mick - that would seem to be him... we must double check with the memorial which may have made the mistake on the spelling of the surname. THANK YOU so much. Chrys ostom
Chrysostom Posted 13 August , 2013 Author Posted 13 August , 2013 I checked in the marriage register and indeed this is the man DEMMLER. It seems strange that the war memorial got his name wrong and was not changed. This could mean the family had moved by the time the memorial was complete... We have put up a notice about researching tour war memorial here: http://stchrysostoms.wordpress.com/ and that includes a photo of Harold Warhurst
jdoyle Posted 13 August , 2013 Posted 13 August , 2013 his Victory Medal http://www.harlandmi...r-Man-Regt.html and gravestone on TWGPP http://twgpp.org/inf....php?id=3164376 marriage info can be seen here : http://www.lan-opc.o..._1914-1920.html the parents ran the "College Hotel" (1911 census and following LG entry) http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/28455/pages/254/page.pdf
ralphjd Posted 13 August , 2013 Posted 13 August , 2013 If you get half as much enjoyment (if thats the right word) from researching your men as I did on our memorial you will be pleasently satisfied,. Good luck and good hunting. Ralph.
