BereniceUK Posted 9 August , 2013 Posted 9 August , 2013 In Blackburn Cemetery is a family kerbstone-style grave and on it are named two Great War casalties, John and Christopher Stoddard. The last 'D' in both surnames looks to me as though it's been changed from 'T'. I can find Christopher Stoddart of the Rifle Brigade, died 27th May 1916, and John Stoddart, East Lancashire Regiment, died 10th June 1915. But on the Little Harwood Great War memorial, three-quarters of a mile away from the cemetery, are Christopher and John Stoddard. Stoddard or Stoddart?
Cameron2165 Posted 9 August , 2013 Posted 9 August , 2013 Hi, There is a service record for Christopher STODDARD on Ancestry http://interactive.ancestry.co.uk/1219/31238_200737-00974/1917420?backurl=http%3a%2f%2fsearch.ancestry.co.uk%2fcgi-bin%2fsse.dll%3fdb%3dBritishArmyService%26h%3d1917420%26indiv%3dtry%26o_vc%3dRecord%253aOtherRecord%26rhSource%3d1543&ssrc=&backlabel=ReturnRecord#?imageId=31238_200737-00974 All the best Cam Having read through the record, he does become STODDART. His next of kin are his parents and they are Robert and Sussanah STODDARD.
CGM Posted 10 August , 2013 Posted 10 August , 2013 If this is the Whalley New Road Cemetery according to a summary on CEMSEARCH-uk there are two graves which could be relevant to your question. STODDARD - 1 grave; 5 people with the surname of STODDARD; 1 other Surname; a total of 6 people. STODDART - 1 Grave; 4 people with the surname of STODDART; 0 other Surnames; a total of 4 people. It might be worth asking to have a look at the cemetery records. You can request a report online but it comes at a cost. http://www.cemsearch.co.uk/blackburn/blackburnS.html CGM
BereniceUK Posted 10 August , 2013 Author Posted 10 August , 2013 Thanks, guys. Yes, it's the Whalley New Road Cemetery. I shall contact the cemetery office as I'm also trying to locate another grave there.

CGM Providence Street is a few hundred yards distance from the Little Harwood memorial so that's got to be them remembered on it. The ages also fit the two that are in the cemetery so it looks to me as though they should be recorded in CWGC as Stoddard. I wonder how they seemingly came to have Stoddart inscribed on the family grave.
