3rd Bn, Grenadier Guards

I'm currently researching a Pte James Westhead who was, reportedly, KIA on 9 October. He is buried in Forenville Military Cemetery. I know Forenville was captured on 8 October. I'd be grateful for any info about the Grenadiers' activities on those two days, particularly confirming if they were actually still in action on the 9th.

Thanks

John

Lt-Col Right Hon Sir F.POnsonby's The Grenadier Guards in the Great War 1914-18 (MacMillan 1920) Vol III records:

The battalion moved to Premy Chapel on the 8th October where it went into reserve for an attack by 62nd Division; it was not needed and moved to Masnieres... "Cambrai could be seen in the distance burning fiercely throughout the night."

The next day it made an attack (9th); there were a number of 'drop shorts' as the battalion attacked with friendly fire casualties. The first objective was taken by 6.30 (am); this first objective was a trench running from Niergnies to Seranvillers; the second objective was the road running from Cambrai to La Targette [not the one at Arras]; with the final objective after a series of bounds was the Cambrai-Beauvois road. Serious resistance wasn't encountered until they reached the final position, close to Igniel-dit-les-Frisettes. Here a number of casualties were suffered from MG fire, but the village was taken by Captain Adair of No 2 Company. In the evening the position was consolidated and an outpost line established with two companies on the Cambrai-Beauvois Road, and two near Estourmel.

It remained in these positions until the next morning when 1st Scots Guards passed through them.

Number of casualties not recorded.
