John Cubin Posted 6 August , 2013 Posted 6 August , 2013 Edward Gribbin kia 8-12-16. His MIC shows him with two service numbers. Any clue there as to when he joined?
sotonmate Posted 6 August , 2013 Posted 6 August , 2013 As a guide a close by number,3687 Pte Adams Border Regiment, attested 23 Nov 1915,then into Reserve until enlisted on 22 Mar 1916. Whether his number was fixed at attestation or at enlistment you will need to find out.
John Cubin Posted 7 August , 2013 Author Posted 7 August , 2013 Thanks Sotonmate. Spoke Border Museum, Carlisle, this morning. They don't have anything definite but think that 3695 was his number in 3/5 Bn Territorials and, going by a number near to 30100, he enlisted in Apr/May 1916. He would, then, have been only a short while in France when he was killed. They say that the 5-digit numbers were issued in the latter half of 1916 to sort out some confusion or other. That sorts it for me! Thanks again. John.
