Black Sapper Posted 26 July , 2013 Posted 26 July , 2013 SDGW has him as Albert Leonard Scott born Herne hill Died 30.10.1915 F & F - KIA Enlisted in London Rank - Gunner #10911 RHA & RFA MIC has him as A L Scott #10911 32nd Brigade RFA (Someone called momo22 from Staffordshire on ancestry corrected his name on 17.03.2012 but they don't seem to have signed in to Ancestry recently) - Qualifying Date for 1914 Star was 23.08.1914 (WS/2/7412) - someone called S.Vines made an aplication for his 1914 Star on behalf of his wife in respect of the services of his late brother Gunner Leonard Scott on 16.06.1919 - Address was: #43, Easton Road, Raynes Park, Merton, SW CWGC has him as Scott A.L. buried/remembered in Houplines Communal Cemetery Extension - Grave ref I.A.5 There is no Service Record as far as I can see? RM1966 Posted 27 July , 2013 Author Posted 27 July , 2013 Thank you very much for all this information !! I don't undertsand the following. Was S.Vines the brother of Leonard ? And did he made the aplication for the wife of Leonard ? Then why is he called Vines instead of Scott: S.Vines made an aplication for his 1914 Star on behalf of his wife in respect of the services of his late brother Gunner Leonard Scott on 16.06.1919 - Address was: #43, Easton Road, Raynes Park, Merton, SW Ronald
battiscombe Posted 27 July , 2013 Posted 27 July , 2013 With his age and that number, I would suspect he was SPECIAL RESERVIST, as that number would have been issued to a regular in c.1900 [when he was c.12], or otherwise c.1910 to a RFRA special reservist. by comparison the number 10749 was issued in 1900 and to an RFRA in 13/9/1910. .. 11096 in october 1910. It will have been used again in September?1914 when a new series began. i would suggest he was a mobilised special reservist .. he 'could' have been doing his training and so in a military camp in 1911 at census time [there are quite a few reservists in the census returns]
Black Sapper Posted 27 July , 2013 Posted 27 July , 2013 S.Vines made the claim on behalf of the soldier's sister, to whom he must have been married. You'd need to find a marriage between S.Vines & a ?? Scott to be certain which sister it was. (possibiities are - Elizabeth, Emily, Louisa or Jane/Lane)? I think that it might be Jane Scott married to Samuel William Vines in Kensington in the 3rd Q 1900 (vol 1a page 421)? In the 1911 Census they lived #342A Kingston Road, Merton SW
RM1966 Posted 27 July , 2013 Author Posted 27 July , 2013 Thanks Black Sapper, I was confused by the words: his late brother: S.Vines made an aplication for his 1914 Star on behalf of his wife in respect of the services of his late brother Gunner Leonard Scott on 16.06.1919 - Address was: #43, Easton Road, Raynes Park, Merton, SW Ronald
Black Sapper Posted 28 July , 2013 Posted 28 July , 2013 Yep, me too initially, but then accepted that it was probably a clerical mistake on the card?
