robigunner88 Posted 24 July , 2013 Posted 24 July , 2013 Hi, Does anyone have a copy of the 9th's war diary for 05/07/1916 or know about any of their actions that day? I'm looking into a soldier who died that day, a Private Samuel Dixon-28144. Thank you Jamie
sotonmate Posted 24 July , 2013 Posted 24 July , 2013 9NF were part of 52 Brigade of 17 Division whose remit at the start of the Battle of Albert on 1 Jul 1916 was to capture Fricourt, which they did on 2 July. THe Division had heavy casualties. It seems they moved on towards Contalmaison and 9NF had casualties, shown as killed on the 5 July,of a 2nd Lt,a Sergeant and 4 Privates. All remembered on the Thiepval Memorial. Possibly casuaties from a raid or an artillery shell ? War Diary WO95/2013/1 covers the date but not yet digital.
robigunner88 Posted 24 July , 2013 Author Posted 24 July , 2013 Thank you Sotonmate. Samuel Dixon is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial so I assume that he was one of the casualties the diary mentions for that day.
