Afternoon All

A souvenir was presented to Sub-Lieutenant Warneford’s Mother (Mrs Corkery of Morton Road Exmouth) by the manufacture of the Morane airplane.

It was a replica of the French Legion of Honour, but in Jewels instead of the enamel of the orignal. The usual white enamel of the Cross is replaced by diamonds; the green part by emeralds and the red portion by rubies, the cross is set in platinum and the centre part in Gold.

9th August 1915

On 17th June 1915, He was presented with the Award and then crashed the same day.

I have a couple of questions re the above. Maybe some forum Pals may have some answers.

The whereabouts of his original French Legion of Honour, I wonder was it lost in the accident and the replica was a replacement?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts

Gerry

Better late than never....at the 'Highworth Remembers 1914-18' event in May 2015 (the Great War centenary event organised by the Wiltshire branch of The Western Front Association 1914-18) the jewel Legion d'Honneur was brought along by a family member. I have a photo if you'd like to PM me - can't get it small enough to upload.

A set of his medals were also brought along - replica VC, 14/15 Star trio and a L d'H but unclear if this was the original. We suspect the original is with the Fleet Air Arm Museum. Nevertheless, having the items presented by the Morane Saulnier firm to Rex Warneford's mother was pretty special.
