I always read the sad obituaries where members have lost their much loved pet's, and I have commiserated as have many, many others. Whilst rereading some of these it occurred to me to wonder whether many of these pets have been given Great War related names. Not a hugely important topic, I know but perhaps an interesting one.

I know a guy with a Schnauzer called " Kaiser "

Thanks Mike,

I had a feeling that Kaiser would be 'top of the list' with the German breeds. Similar to Winston for bulldogs I guess!

Well, our cats are Sherlock and Kipling - the last Sherlock Holmes story His Last Bow is set as the storm clouds of war are gathering (see my signature). And of course Rudyard Kipling's WW1 connection is well known.

So maybe a little tenuous...

I don't have any cats Alan, but if I did, I think Mata Hari would be a strong contender for a female cat.

More common in cool black cats.

My GP when I was kid had two Dachsunds named after German Generals. He was a Major in the RAMC during WW1.

a friend has an Alaskan Malamut called Kaiser...I asked him if it was after Kaiser Willhelm..........the answer was ............."WHO`S HE THEN?"

My GF called one of his dogs "Foch" (and his house "Gavrelle")

We haven't consciously given our cats WW1 names.

Dora was simply a suitable name for an adorable mother-of-two; we usually shorten Jeremy to Jerry.

You'll maybe have seen Wully. He's named after a certain CIGS.
