2/Lieutenant J. Fairlie, 1st Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) was comm. January 1900 and went on half-pay in 1908 due to illness. Did he come back for 1914?

Try searching the London Gazette from 1908 onwards to see if there are any entries.

J. Fairlie was James Fairlie. He is not in the index of the Army List of August 1914, but no gazette found for his resignation between 1907, when he went on half pay, and end of 1914.

The following suggest he probably did not serve in WW1 due to ill-health.

1911 Census - 17, Chestnut Avenue, Bournemouth.

James Fairlie head 30 single Lieutenant Regular Army born Ayrshire, Galston / Resident

Eva Mary Edney visitor 32 single sick nurse born Herts., Hemel Hempstead

The Times, Saturday July 3 1926

DEATHS

FAIRLIE - On the 29th June at Aldershot, JAMES FAIRLIE (late Cameronians) of Holms, Ayrshire, elder son of the late William Fairlie, J.P., D.L., of Holms.

PROBATE 1927

FAIRLIE James of Holms Galston Ayrshire died 29 June 1926 at the Oaks, Aldershot, Dorsetshire. Confirmation of the Union Bank of Scotland and Eva Mary Edney. Sealed London 26 January.

Thanks Harry, I was looking at the LG from 1900 till 1940 and like you mentioned couldn't find any mention of his resignation. The last active service entry of him in Hart's was 1907 then nothing. Thanks again!!
